Slow Summer for Music, huh?

Is it just me or have there not been very many good concerts in town lately? I haven't been to a show in ages, and I'm dying to go see something good, but there hasn't been much that's piqued my interest yet.

I see a couple of good things coming up in November (the Anti-Pop Music Festival and Reverend Horton Heat), but not much in the next few weeks.

Anybody else feeling like the music scene's been a little slow lately or is it just me?

- Diane

Re: Slow Summer for Music, huh?

  • Of course, looking on the bright side, maybe this will help me convince DH that we've got to go see Conor Oberst when he's here for Anti-Pop. (yay!)
  • Yes, its been horrible. Orlando has getting worse and worse each year in my opinion. We saw Smashing Pumpkins a few week back- worst show I've ever been to. The last great show I saw was All American Rejects a whole year ago! I didnt think I'd like them as much a I did, my friend works for Clearchannel and got me tickets. I loved them.

What kind of music are you into mostly? I like punk rock and stuff like that...

  • My tastes are kind of a mix. I like a lot of indie rock, punk, americana/alt-country and a smattering of other stuff. I think my favorite genres are rockabilly and psychobilly, although those shows are kind of few and far between around here.

For a while, I thought we had a pretty good music scene, and I even bragged on it a little to people who lived in other cities, but the past year or so I'm just not finding many things I want to go to, or I'm seeing artists pass us up for other parts of the state.

I think the last shows I saw were Rilo Kiley at House of Blues and Tiger Army at Firestone--both last October. Ugh, I need to get out more! LOL

  • Tiger army is good. Before I had kids we went to concerts almost every week; we loved it. My favorite band is Mxpx, have you ever heard of them? I'm still stuck as a teenager but I love them. I also love AFI ( I saw them for an MTV taping @ HRL, best show of my life I think) ... I used to like Good Charlotte, they used to come to Orlando before they were famous, now though, I dont really like their music.

Do you like Better than Ezra? they are kind of a weird taste, but I really like them.

Dashboard confessional and Panic at the disco are coming. I dont tend to like them too much and I saw DB once and they kind of sucked live :(

  • I just read in the paper today that Sugarland, Kellie Pickler and some Ashton guy are coming to Osceola Heritage Park in Nov. Not sure if anyone is into country. I think Brad Paisely is also in Tampa at some point soon.?
  • All I know is that if they keep playing that Katy Perry "I Kissed A Girl" song much more, I'm going to go insane.

  • Sadly, I am looking forward to the free Styx concert at the end of the month, since dh loves them... pretty bad.... Embarrassed

Mxpx and AFI are really good. I really like that song "Good" from Better Than Ezra, but I haven't kept up with what they're doing lately.

P.S. What was bad about the Smashing Pumpkins concert? I looooved them back in the 90s but didn't really get overly excited when they got back together because I was kind of worried they'd have lost their touch after being broken up so long. Sounds like that's the case?

LOL I didn't know there was one, but if my DH hears about it, I think we'll have to go too because he also likes them.

I have to admit those free concerts may not seem super hip, but they are a lot of fun. We went to see Cyndi Lauper several years ago, back when the concerts were at Church Street, and the place was packed and so energetic. It was soooo fun!
