Please tell me my husband is NOT the only one ...

who would like a Video Game party?

His birthday is coming up soon and his friends (mostly friends from high school and college) are REALLY into Call of Duty Modern Warfare on the PS3. They play online all the time, so I figured combining birthday and gaming would be a no-brainer.

Our house has a pool, so we would probably grill outside and hang by the pool ... but I need help figuring out how to create a bracket style video game tournament. Also, anyone have any creative ideas with snacks?

I think it's really funny that any ideas on ine are more for 9 year olds, not 29 year olds. :)

Re: Please tell me my husband is NOT the only one ...

  • My husband, and the husbands of at least three or four of my friends would SO be there.

Depending on the game/modes, you can do the bracket similar to any sports tournament -- who will play head to head, winner from that will advance to play a winner from another head to head, etc. I've seen it done with games like Madden and MLB, but not war games. Is there a head-to-head mode? (My DH mostly plays MMO/RPG games, so I don't know...)

Also, unless you want them playing from 8:00 a.m. to midnight, I would see if one of your husband's friends can bring over their PS3/game and set it up on multiple TVs (like playing soccer on multiple fields at the same time). When you get down to the "championship," everyone can crowd around the biggest TV.

I'd do the same types of food as you would at a Super Bowl party -- chips, dip, pretzles, beer, etc.

  • Wow, my husband and his friends would absolutely LOVE this kind of party! My DH has Xbox 360 and his friends are constantly playing online. So no you're definitely not the only one!

As far as the party, I would create a big poster board and draw a NCAA type bracket with the names of the party guests and keep it outside on the patio or deck area. This way everyone will have to come outside to at least check the bracket and see who's beating who. That could help people stay outside around the grilling area and the pool. I liked pp's idea of having someone else bring another game consul so that it won't take as long as just using one for everybody.

I would keep the food and drinks outside so people mingle outside and have fun swimming and mingling. As far as what to serve, I would stick to a BBQ/Superbowl party type food. Cook up some hot dogs, hamburgers, and maybe chicken or ribs on the grill, have some chip and dips available, hot wings, nachos, etc.. I usually make Buffalo Chicken Dip for every party or get together we go to and it's always a hit.

Maybe you should also have some sort of prize for the ultimate winner of the bracket so the winner can not only "talk smack" to the other players but have bragging rights over the gift as well.

  • You are DEF not alone! :) I think it's a GREAT idea!

I agree with PP about creating the NCAA bracket, as well as having atleast 2 game systems.

I make a fabulous frito dip... take a  can of chili and a package of cream cheese and mix together. Always a hit! :)

    GL! :)

  • This is a great idea!  One of our close friends has a "Wii-cathalon" once a year and what he does is give "point values" but it probably depends on the kind of games you'd play.  Something like Call of Duty or a 1st person shooter would probably need a NCAA type bracket.  He does themed foods by decorating cookies with themes based on the games such as "Yoshi eggs" or "Pokemon balls", also he includes other foods like "Donkey Kong Punch"  It all depends on your creativity and the games you choose.  You can take almost any food and find a way to tie it in to either the name or location of the game.

    Good luck!

  • this might be totally over the top, but can you decorate your house like some building in call of duty? (large red paper pools of blood on the floor, "broken" or boarded up windows? then the boys can play with dart guns?

if they play PC games you can just have a lan party, everyone brings their own computers to play togehter.

i like the tournament ideas above though. and multiple tvs and consoles,.

even have a non-tournament console/tv set up to play just for fun. (maybe some wife-friendly games?)
