Hy-Vee

The Iowa folks likely don't care as much... but Hy-Vee broke into the Peoria market as of Tuesday. I went to the store yesterday. It is HUGE! Bigger than any one I had been to before. The prices aren't all that great (although they had some nice sales on a few things). Kinda out of my way for everyday shopping, but I'll be back to eat at the Hy-Vee Chinese! Big Smile

Re: Hy-Vee

  • Hy-Vee is my closest store. I never shopped there until I started watching the sale ads. Their red hot weekend deals are awesome! I get most of my groceries at Aldi but go to Hy-Vee for meat and on-sale items. I love it! I loathe Wal-Mart and becoming a consience sale watcher has enabled me to avoid Wal-Mart and stay within budget.

Sad though - ours is old and doesn't have Chinese :( I l.o.v.e.d their chinese when we used to live by one that had it.

  • I usually do some shopping at Aldi, and the majority at Kroger. (Our taste buds can't handle as much Aldi stuff as we used to.)

Hy-Vee beat out Kroger for several things... blueberries 88 cents, cereal $1.48 (plus I had coupons, so I got 2 boxes for free!), crackers $1.88, pasta salad 78 cents. But some things Kroger had on sale were more expensive at Hy-Vee- my Lean Cuisne lunches for example.

Now if they could just build a 2nd Hy-Vee :)

  • I wish we had a Kroger...or a whole foods...or a trader joes... but alas, these are my two closest stores. I can't afford to shop at Schnucks and Fareway is too far ;) lol. I think Aldi is getting better too -- its def not like when I was growing up. Since moving so close to one I started going there for convenience and I've noticed they have a great produce selection if you go during the right time of week and you can't beat their milk and other dairy prices

  • I will agree that Aldi is much better than it used to be. Pizza and mac and cheese are my definate no-gos. The fresh fruits/veggies are hit or miss.

Peoria is getting a "Fresh Market"... aka Trader Joe's wannabe. I'll have to check it out to know if I'll like it. But it's still far out of my way. I do think trader Joe's is missing out on a large market in the US by not hitting up the smaller metro areas.

  • I am a huge Hy-Vee fan especially with their on-line ordering. I am usually always running short on time and not a grocery shopping fan; therefore if you pay an additional fee they will do your shopping for you with in store pick up or delivery to your home. Love it and would totally recommend it!
