*What would you have done? ![]()
So, Friday night DH and i went out with friends to see Inception, then went out for food afterwards. We ended up at Knickerbocker Grill on 9th and University and it was a bit higher priced than we were looking for. DH actually wasn't too hungry so he got a salad, and i'm trying to keep us from spending too much money so i got a lamb flatbread appetizer (which was super yummy!).
One of the friends we went out with is a *complete* cheapskate! Like the kind of person who pays for his share of the bill, but doesn't always factor in tax or tip, thereby making everyone else chip in a bit more. :-/ (we can't always point fingers that it's him, but we're 99.9% sure...and some other friends kind of do it too) So it's gotten to the point where i want to get separate checks or really sit and figure out the bill, down to the penny, and factoring in tax and tip!! Cuz we're not made of money either. ![]()
Anyways...i wasn't too hungry either so i only had half of my flatbread. This friend saw that and asked if he could have the rest. (he and his wife both had their own french onion soup) I don't want food to go to waste, so i say sure. BUT, should i have asked for money from him, since they ate half of my food, essentially sharing it with me?! He's done this before, like eating leftover fries from someone else, or finishing off someone's meal. I *didn't* ask for money from him, cuz i didn't want it to be awkward, but i brought it up to DH on the way home (it's his friend and he knows all about his 'frugalness').

I wouldn't do anything. I dislike when you are in a large party and there is someone (or more than one person) who doesn't understand about tax and tipping well. I can understand having someone eye my meal like a ravenous wolf can be intimidating. But I don't think it's worth it overall to ask for money like that.
Times like you described above are easily curbed with a separate bill and a doggy bag.
I would have said "sorry, I'd love to share but I am actually saving this part for lunch tomorrow".
I had a group of friends in college who did this ALL THE TIME. They would order something really small, like a side salad for $4.99 and a soda for $1.50 and give us literally $6.50 for their share. MAYBE they'd give $7, but $0.50 isn't enough to cover tax and tip!! It got so frustrating, my "normal" friends and I hated going out with thm.

i'm totally with the PPs. wouldnt have asked for money, but it's a crappy situation.
(ps...i was about to answer favorite restaurant with knickerbocker grill, because it's another one that's high on my list. what can i say, i like steak!)
