toddler question

Lila can now say pee and poop, and indicates when she's going to go in her diaper.   She also HATES diaper changes (remember the elephant to the eye episode?) I'm wondering if this indicates readiness for toilet training or i'm living in a dream world.

Re: toddler question

  • that sounds promising to me. my friend swears by the Once Upon a Potty DVD to help with potty training.
  • If she can tell you BEFORE she goes, she's definitely ready.  If she just tells you after/during, then I would at least start putting her on the potty and asking her to go.

Honestly, daycare started it with us and he's MUCH more consistant there, but that may be because there are 7 other kids in the same room who are also potty training.  He wears underwear there full time now, but is still very hit and miss at home (though we did have TWO mornings with dry diapers this weekend and he went about 24 hrs without an accident*, woot woot!)

*Did I mention the accident was on the floor at Dave & Busters?  I assume that my sister's told someone who worked there so that the floor could be cleaned up as I rushed out of the restaurant to change him. I'm not sure that I verified that.  Does that meet the controversy/flammable post request?

  • I think if she understands the urge to go, she's ready to start!  I've heard about an Elmo potty video too, which I'm keeping in the back of my mind because Ian is taking a shine to him.
  • oh Wendy.,.. i am laughing so hard right now.

Andy took Lila to brush her teeth the other night straight out of the bath and diaperless.   He could see her face doing something weird int he mirror, but didn't realize what was happening until her heard poop hit the floor.

  • taking a shine to Elmo turns into an obsession real fast!

  • my kid allegedly knocks other kids off the potty at daycare trying to get to it, but she has no use for it at home.  "NO pee pee in the potty!!!"  whatever.

Throw some big girl undies on that kid and see how it goes.  The worst that can happen is that the kid refuses for 2 hrs, finally pees on the kitchen floor, falls in it while the dog licks it up and you give up and eat the entire bag of potty bribery M&Ms yourself.  (true story, by the way).

  • I agree with the underpants advice - Matt wore them at home this weekend and he did really well. I have the CUTEST picture of him just in some Mickey Mouse undies.

I would get m&m's to bribe him with, but I am pretty sure I know how that would go.

  • Oh, I am SO not looking forward to potty training.  Some friends of mine have had great success (one friend's daughter just decided when she was around two that she was a big girl and should no longer use diapers.  Within a month, she wore only big girl underpants).  Others, not so much (ie 4 yr olds who still refuse to poo in the potty).

And, btw, I would never be able to keep a bag of potty bribery M&Ms on hand.  Those suckers would be gone in a day.

  • We recently transitioned from peeing like a girl to standing up (using cheerios for target practice) with great enthusiasm.  Connor now runs through the house "I pee pee the cereal! I pee pee the cereal!"

  • Ikea has cheap potties sam. 2.99 or something.

I say give it a try. We have 3, one for each bathroom. She is doing really well. We also bought Dora underwear. Because you don't pee on dora. She'll run screaming to the potty yelling "I noooo pee on you dora. No worrY!" drop her drawers and sit on the potty.

She's had a few accidents but is doing really well overall. I stick her in a diaper for naps and nighttime. She doesn't pee during naps but I don't want to have to clean sheets if she does have an accident so yeah. I'm lazy there.

Oh!  I just want you to know that I tried this.  FAIL.  Connor would just walk in and very proudly have this conversation:

Connor: I pee pee on Mater!

Me: No! Mater doesn't like pee pee.  Don't pee on Mater.

Connor: Yeah, Mom.  I pee pee on Mater.

    The end.

LOL! Who is Mater? Maybe he ought to have Dora underpants! :P

Liza will piss Dora silly.  She doesn't care.  I did, however, catch her telling her Dora doll the other day, "No, No Dora.  Don't pee yourself!"

  • I third the undie idea! But let her pick them herself. Will wouldn't wear the ones I originally got him and got mad. He wanted some "like dada". We tried having him go w/ just underwear using the 3 day method and just watching for cues then rewarding him with stickers (kid loves stickers). It went well then he regressed. We also found that letting him sit on the big potty w/ one of those child adapter things went much better than a little potty. After he regressed we tried again about a month later, still no success, then about a month later and he got it right away that time. 100% potty trained overnight. So if it doesn't go well just be patient!

  • Mater is the tow truck from the movie cars, which Connor loves.

Dora underwear would be quite a sight at daycare I think.
