I need your expert opinion (I'm asking you because I know as a realtor you've been in tons of homes and I'm sure with your family business you've also been in tons more).
As I said earlier, we're going to put in new countertops soon now that the condo will be off our hands. And I need to figure out exactly what color and kind. I'm a big fan of quartz countertops. BUT we aren't going to change our floor, which is a terracotta color (see picture below). I definitely want to change the backsplash though. SO, what would you recommend as to colors for the countertop and for the backsplash (and what kind of backsplash)?
The picture below is from when we first looked at the house. All the appliances are now black except the fridge which is stainless. I will also be changing the cabinet handles to something not white.
Re: ~~Graves~~
I think you need to go darker like a black with some flecks of gold/orange/brown in it like this...

My initial thought was something more brown and possibly lighter but with the dark appliances I like a darker countertop. And it seems like you have enough natural light in the room that it wouldn't make the room look small or too dark.
Oh I do like that. We have a sample of one that looks kind of like that. MH and I were looking at the really dark ones and some of the more brown colors but I was worried about having too much brown in the kitchen if we did a brown (especially since our cabinets are kind of a weird color).
What about a backsplash? I'm thinking I won't do the backsplash all the way around the kitchen like it is now, but just have wall in some places and do the backsplash behind the cooktop.
I would go with a tile matching whatever color you choose. I would only do it around the cooktop unless you get a lot of light in there. That way it won't get too dark. I like smaller tiles like in the 5th picture here

I too think a brown countertop would be too much with the cabinets and floors.
That blog is awesome. I would love to do something like this at my cooktop.
This is what the kitchen looks like where the cooktop is (picture taken when we looked at the house so the ovens are different and that rug isn't there):
Here you go! complete with black appliances (pay no attention to the mess on the counters):
