I'm in a huge rut these days when it comes to reading. I've been re-reading stuff all summer. I want to read something new, but can't seem to get into anything. The only new thing I've been able to finsh is Percy Jackson. I'm not a 12 year old boy. Tell me what to read, please.
Re: Book Recs?
I've been on a non-fiction kick lately. I really enjoyed The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and The Big Burn (by the same guy who wrote The Worst Hard Time, which I loved - I think I'm going to read the other book he wrote next, and I don't even remember what it's about).
For fiction, I just started Noah's Compass, the new one by Anne Tyler, and so far it's good but I'm only 10% through. I also enjoyed the Steig Larsson books and A Gate at the Stairs, by Lorrie Moore.
I've been on this ridiculous YA kick this year for whatever reason. I read the Hunger Games books, HP, The Luxe, Shiver/Linger...send help.
I looooooved the new Stephen King, but it's like 800 pages. I also really enjoyed "Dark Places" by Gillian Flynn. it's pretty dark but I liked it.
I bet her FUPA's name is Shane, like the gunslinger/drifter of literature.--HappyTummy
I've got no recommendations, but I wanted to ask if you ever found a book club around here.
Noisy, about half of what I read is non-fiction, so I'll check those out.
Bethie, I'm all about the YA, too. I re-read HP 5,6,7 regularly, as well as everything by Cynthia Voigt.
Wendy, nope. I kind of forgot about it for awhile. A friend I am seeing tonight used to be in one, I'll ask her about it.
"Once I got a bath bomb that, once exploded, filled the tub with confetti. Little sharp metallic pieces of confetti. The product description said nothing about confetti. Oh look, there's a tiny, sharp metallic blue star stabbing me in the labia. HOW RELAXING. " - NoisyPenguin
I'm right there with you. I finished Hunger Games and Catching Fire in 2 days.
I also read Shiver (recommended by PDX I think?) and just got the second book in that series called Linger. This has also spawned a daily struggle to get The Cranberries out of my head.
I think the Stieg Larsson books totally live up to the hype. (The movie of the first book, THe Girl WIth The Dragon Tatoo, was actually really good too and I don't often say that about book-to-film movies!)
I blew my way through the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. They are brainless, but often funny, fluffy reads about a bounty hunter chick and all of her escapades.
On a more serious note I absolutely could not stop reading Little Bee. It's a beautifully written book.
