Getaway recs

Hello ladies! I'm a frequent poster on one of the other local boards and was hoping you guys could help me out =)

DH and I are considering a trip up to your area so I am looking to get some suggestions on where we should go. We want to go camping in the mountains and also spend a couple days on the beach. The only thing I'm looking at in particular is nothing too tourist-y more the local feel if you know what I mean.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Getaway recs

  • As far as beaches go, newport and lincoln city aren't too touristy. that's more central, seaside is more north and i find it to be more touristy but there is a lot to do up there. I'm more partial to Newport however. Dh and i have stayed at the Elizabeth inn which is a Best western, has a great restaurant downstairs, a pool, hottub, and is right on the beach for a reasonable price. There is a lot to do in historic newport, the wax museum, ripley's believe it or not, a lot of fun shops, whale watching tours, fishing tours, helicopter tours... I used to stay there with my family at least a few times per year. If you get the chance and don't mind the drive you should stay in central oregon for the mountains. Bend, sisters or redmond. Dh and i went to redmond for our honeymoon and it was amazing. So much to do. And Sister's Coffee Company is the best coffee i have ever tasted, yes, better than Starbucks. :) You can write to me if you want more ideas. I could talk about Oregon all day long and am glad to do so! I know a lot of campgrounds, places to stay, eat, fish, shop. Whatever you like to do.
  • Another option for campgrounds in the mountains is to check out the campsites near Mt. Hood. There are a lot on little lakes that are walk-up sites. See Timothy Lake, Frog Lake, Trillium Lake, Still Creek for instance.

For the beach I really like Manzanita. It's a cute little town. I like Yachats too, it's a lot further south.

  • Bandon and Florence are lovely beach towns too.  Bandon Beach is my favorite beach on the Oregon coast but it is southern oregon.

I do like Newport, but I find Lincoln City to be too cheesy touristy for my tastes.  I agree with PP recs for Manzanita though.

As far as mountains go, you can't go wrong with either Bend area or Mt. Hood.  I really like Timothy Lake and Trillium Lake.  Also, look into Crater Lake National Park if you are into that.  Crater Lake is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places I have ever seen.  Seriously, words cannot describe it.

  • Thank you ladies! Bend is already on our list (my dad lives there) and I don't mind driving all over the state since we'll have about a week or so. Its been so long since I've been up there to see anything, I'm really excited (I grew up in Albany until I was 11) to make it up there again. DH has never been and since he's pretty much always been in TX, he has no clue what "real" mountains are. Stick out tongue

livishull - I will definitely be saving your name to PM you when we get closer to making our plans!

  • Be careful how you plan things - it's a 4-5 hour drive from Bend to the coast, and if you decide to go more southern coast it'll be be more.  So you're looking at losing a day to driving.  If you're flying into PDX, then you'll have a 4 hour drive from Portland to Bend, so there's another half day of driving. I don't know if it's feasible, but if you flew into PDX and did the beach, then drove to Bend and flew home from Redmond (or vice versa if you want to start in Bend), that would be ideal.

I'll second (or third) Manzanita for a less touristy spot.  If you decide to go with Lincoln City (which is actually one of my favorite beaches, even if it is a little touristy), you might want to stay in Road's End, which is less so.  We like to rent through www.horizonrentals.com.

You grew up in Albany?! I was born and raised there! This is so exciting to me! haha

  • We just went to Crater Lake 2 weeks ago and it was beautiful....there is an easy drive to Crater Lake from Bend.

  • My husband and I spent our honeymoon at the Stephanie Inn in Cannon Beach and thoroughly enjoyed that.

My parents and I stayed at the Tu Tu Tun Lodge in Gold Beach a few years ago.  There are a lot of outdoor activities (kayaking, hiking, etc) around if you are into that sort of thing.  Gold Beach is also further south, so it would be easier to get to from Crater Lake or Bend.

I will also add to the recommendations for Bend/Sun River.  Sisters is a great town with tons of charm and they have festivals going on fairly frequently throughout the year.  Bend is a great town, although in the past few years there has been a growing Portland/Seattle influence there.
