WWYD re: viruses

My computer has been inftected with the same virus for the 3rd time in less than a year.  The first time was from downloading torrents and limewire files (which I stopped doing after the first virus), but the last two times are an unknown cause.   This last time, it uninstalled my Norton Antivirus, so I went online and downloaded AVG free, which found 4 trojans, but the computer still isn't working.  I have it in the shop today and they're looking to see what needs to happen.  Just in the initial check, the computer guy said it might be wise to reinstall the OS and start fresh.  The problem is, since this is the 3rd virus this year (I only bought the computer last fall), it's getting rather expensive.  I think I'm up to about $225 on computer repairs so far.  If he has to reinstall the OS, that'll probably cost me another $200.  Which all together is almost as much as I paid for the computer in the first place.

So here's my dilemma.  I don't know whether to suck it up and pay the $200 for him to reinstall the OS, or if I should get the computer back, buy the Windows 7 cd (currently it's running Vista) and do the install myself OR if I should just consider this computer a lost cause and get a new one.  I hate to pay as much in repairs as I paid for the thing in the first place, but at the same time, I'm about to move and I'm really not wanting to shell out $500 for a new computer until sometime after our move.

What would you do?  Do you think it's worth spending all that money on a year old computer?  Do you have any better suggestions for me?

Why do you need to upgrade to Windows 7?  Could you just reinstall Vista?

  • I would never pay to reinstall the OS. Yes it requires a lot of time waiting but it is something that an average computer user can do on their own.

I don't have a Vista CD.  I figured if I have to buy a cd anyway, it might as well be an upgrade.  Unless, of course, there's some way to reformat without the cd??

  • When you bought the computer you should have received driver discs.  In those, there should be the OS for the computer with serial number and everything.

I don't think so, but I'll check.  Thanks.
