For those that are already married....

How much time did you take off for your wedding? Right now I'm scheduled to take off the week before to go up to Michigan and get everything taken care of. I had planned on being mostly done with wedding details by that point and mainly relaxing that week but it's sounding like it's not going to happen.

Would it be overkill for me to take 2 weeks off work for before the wedding? I just wish I could work my days here and be up there getting wedding stuff done in the evenings. lol...There's just a lot of little details that my mom and sister are dealing with right now that I wish I could be up there to help with....

Re: For those that are already married....

  • I only took off the Friday before my wedding, but it was here in town.  Then I took off time for the honeymoon.

What will be left to do that needs to be taken care of in person?  Is there someone there already you trust to help you out?

  • Well... I quit my job due to the pending marriage because the boy lived 5 hours away and I had to move to stinkin' Illinois.

My last day was Wednesday before the wedding. So I had Thursday and Friday to do last minute stuff. I did all sorts of last minute stuff every night after work that week too.  I think 2 weeks before is too much time. I don't think I had THAT much to do that required 10 days off.By the end of the week, for me, there were some smaller details that just had to be forgotten because time was up!

I agree... what is it that needs to be done yet? Are you a complete over-achiever and those small things driving you crazy? What can you do by phone with vendors? (Eg, they'll do for you, and bring it to you, or just swing by and pick up). I had a great group of vendors that liked using email.

My last minute things I remember doing the week of were the bridesmaids gifts and gifts for my parents. I also got an oil change and car wash/vacuum (feared I would have to haul people around town, eg bridesmaids getting hair done... but never ended up driving anyone but myself). I did most of my "checking" with vendors more than 7 days before, so I didn't have to deal with it at the last minute.

Do you have a personal assistant that can handle some smaller details? I asked mine to have hair/makeup touchup stuff handy and a sewing kit if needed. One less thing for me to pack! She also was to do a quick run of the church when we got done to make sure nothing got left behind (and take it with her if something was left behind so I could get it later).

  • Sorry about having to move to IL... I'm in Iowa for the same reason, I just moved 8 months before the wedding.

My mom is up there doing a bulk of the work right now and I'm starting to feel bad about all the work she's doing even though I know she's happy to be doing it. I'm getting frustrated trying to deal with everything by phone. I like face-to-face much better. I wish my vendors, particularly my reception venue were better at e-mail. I e-mailed them on Monday and I'm still waiting to hear back. I don't feel like I NEED those 10 days but if I could have the evenings after work up there, it'd make life so much easier.

Maybe it's more just homesickness setting in... This is my big block of time off this year and I was hoping to get everything done down here before I head up and just visit with family and friends that week for the most part. My mom has a bad habit of finding new projects to add just because and I'm feeling overwhelmed with things to take care of everytime I get off the phone with her.

  • Have you told your mom about how overwhelmed you are? I think you need to set up some boundaries with her about your time constraints. (Not saying you should snap on your mom... but give her the hint it's at that point.) Are any of your bridesmaids helping you out? What about the in-laws?

At my wedding, I really didn't get to hang out with the out of town people. Wish I could have had more time to be with them since many of our guests/family traveled from afar.

Been in Illi for 4 years. Not getting out anytime soon. Iowa is cheaper to live, less taxes, and doesn't have the Chicago politics. I never saw myself living in the QC when dating, but eventually we're going to get back to DH's roots. Might be 10 years before we get there though.

Do remember that you only have one day for the wedding... relax and enjoy that day and take in the moments. And party it up that night! The stress won't last forever, and you'll come back to reality and wonder what you are going to do with all your extra free time. Maybe we can all meet up one weekend and celebrate with you!!!

  • Thanks for the advise! I ended up talking to my adviser and he said most people have taken 2 weeks off for their weddings, one for before, one for the honeymoon and since I don't get the honeymoon :( I should just take off the extra week. I figured I might as well just use the extra time to spend up in Michigan. I've got a lot of family up there that I never get to spend enough time with. It's my only real vacation time this year so I might as well enjoy it!

At least you're not in Chicago! I could never handle it. Although I grew up in a town with 2 stoplights and think Iowa City is a big city!

  • I'd rather be in Chicago, but DH could not manage it. But everytime I do go to Chicago nowadays... the driving freaks me out. 10 & 2 all the way!

If the 2 weeks before the wedding is what you need to make it all work the way you want, then do it. No one is going to stop you. And if you have the time and the okay from the superiors to do it, then nothing is preventing you. Afterall, it is YOUR wedding, and you want it to be something you are proud to remember. Cool

  • I took off Thursday and Friday.  Then we both took off Monday after the wedding since we didn't have a honeymoon planned.  Funny/Annoying story - his mother wanted to come see our new house (we moved 3 hours away 2 weeks before the wedding) on the Monday after the wedding. the ONLY day we took off.  Yeah, that was a fun conversation to have with the H.
  • I had just moved to IL the month before the wedding and hadn't found a job yet. We were married back home in MO, so I headed back the Saturday before the wedding. DH was OOT for a work thing, so there was no reason for me to sit around our apartment by myself when I could go and stay with my parents.

We didn't have a honeymoon, so we came back to IL the morning after the wedding. DH went back to work on Monday.

  • Our wedding was in the Quad Cities and I live in the Quad Cities. Therefore, I just took off the Friday prior to the wedding and the week after the wedding for our honeymoon.
