My dog ate my...

iPhone!  I am sooooo mad at him!  Last night when I was getting ready to go to bed I could not find my phone.  I looked everywhere and it was no where to be found!  We do not have a home phone, and hubby is gone so he could not call it.  I logged onto Facebook and luckily a friend was on line, she called my phone over and over.  Finally I found it in the backyard!  He had destroyed it, chewed through the protective case and everything!  Ugggg!  And, I just go this phone in December, so I am no where near eligable for an upgrade!

I should not be surprised, I should have known better, he eats everything!  He is only 6 months old, a lab mix, and so far in just the few months we have had him he has eaten the following:

4 pairs of my hubby's sunglass, my lap top cable, 2 lamp wires, a hole in the side of our couch, countless pillows, the tassel from my Masters graduation ceremony (only about 2 days after I got it), many DVDs, the collars off of our other dogs (while they were wearing them), hundreds of dollars worth of new landscaping, and now my iPhone.  I do not even know how he gets to all of this stuff, its not like we just have stuff laying all over the house!  I mean, my phone was on the freaking table where it shoul be!

Does anyone have any advice on how to get him to stop doing this?!  He is literally eating us out of house and home!  I have tried the bitter apple spray and hot pepper on things, they do not work.  HELP!

  • LOL! All I can say is that I have been there! When Brody was a puppy, he ate everything! (toys, towels, blankets, clothes, game controller..) We crated him while we were at work, and that helped. He had to out grow it. He is now 3 years old, and will still get something from time to time, but very rarely now. If he is only 6 months old, he will outgrow it. Wink

I think this is good info, while Daphanie never ate anything but we do crate her while we are at work,  I am sorry about your phone =(

Yes!  He has so many things to chew on!  A HUGE bone, those kong toys, ropes, balls, other chewy things.

    Oh..lol

He is just being a little jerk then...lol

  • He may just have to outgrow it like someone else said. We have a husky mix not a lab so I don't know if it's the same but she chews on stuff when we don't pay her enough attention. Same thing with accidents in the house. She's chewed up sunglasses and laptop cords too and one time we found the remote to the VCR(yes we still have one of those ancient things) with a bite in it. Like literally one bite. I think she was just doing it to be a brat.

But she got better once we started paying more attention to her when we got home and put her outside a few times when she was bad. She hasn't done it since.

Someone explained it to me as they're just looking for attention, whether it be good or bad it's still attention to them. That's why they chew on things that aren't their toys, just to get a reaction.

  • Oh geez that stinks!  They say most of the chewing on random objects lessens by the time they are a year (so hopefully you're halfway there).  I also 2nd the crating idea.  Also when my pup was a youngun and into chewing all the time, I'd crate her when I needed to focus on other things like dishes or some type of housekeeping when she'd go sneak away for a nibble and I couldn't watch her like a hawk.  Also I'd alternate the dog toys so they don't get too bored and toss in a toy and treat when going to the crate so its not a punishment, just a change of scenery.  The other thing is more active breeds need lots of exercise since a lot of chewing is from boredom so several long walks or fetching or swimming would be a good way to burn down some of that lab puppy energy.  The end is in sight, hang in there!  My sis's dog chewed through so much stuff her first year, including furniture (sofa and bed frame- my sis still holds a grudge), but thankfully it didn't last much longer after she turned a year old.  GL!
