Hi All...new nestie here...just married June 26th.
Hosting a few friends over this Saturday for dinner and they really like the odd and unique micro-brews. I am somewhat clueless with this and was hoping that you guys may be able to help me out. What type of beer should I serve...anything that's popular or anyone is really fond of drinking? Also, any suggestions on what type of food I should serve with it would be great. Thanks so much for you guys help!
Re: Unique Micro Brews
Where do you live? A lot of my friends around here love to drink beer from local breweries (here it is Great Lakes). I would ask on your local board if there are any they'd recommend. Here you can find the local brew in any grocery store.
I would just make sure to get a few different styles. In the summer a lot of people like to drink wheat beers like hoegarden, blue moon, pyramid hefevisen (sp?). Most brewery's summer beer is something similar. Then I would get a pale ale as well like sierra nevada, and maybe one other darker beer like a lager. If you have a whole foods by you, they have a good selection of microbrews and the store employees in the wine/beer area are really knowledgeable. Trader Joe's doesn't have quite as large a selection but their employees are great for this kind of thing too.
Really if you're buying the beer, I don't think anyone will complain!
If these people like craft beer don't get anything from Anheuser-Busch. That's just offensive. I would also stay away from the more mainstream micro-brews like Sierra Nevada and Sam Adams, especially if the goal is odd and unique.
What you'll find depends largely on where you live, since micro breweries generally only distribute regionally. Go to a well-stocked local beer store and ask the clerk for recommendations.
You'll probably want something light and sessionable, so pick up a 12-pack of a pilsner-style lager or summer ale. Then get a six-pack or 1-2 big bottles each of an IPA, Wheat beer, and a stout. That will give you a good variety that should please everyone.
If you want to be all theme-y, go with pub food, but you can serve beer with any kind of food. I wouldn't be too worried about pairing.
Crap...I Mean Crafts
Thank you guys for all the help. These are friends of DH and I had him ask what their fav drink is...expecting something different from beer...liquor I understand...then they said odd micro-brews and I was like...crap.
Hehe...we are going to do steak, grilled veggies, and roasted potatoes...hope that works for the beers I find. Thanks again!
I totally second the no Wild Blue... it's not really a craft beer. If you're anywhere near Atlanta, try Sweetwater Blue. It's good.
Anything from New Belgium (Fat Tire, Ranger, their new summer one) is good and easily accessible.
I'm a new nestie too... not married yet, but we just moved into our new townhouse! Good luck with entertaining!
