Help - Phone idiot

What does it mean when a phone is rooted? I am looking on ebay and a few say that. Will sprint still activate a 'rooted' phone? TIA!

Re: Help - Phone idiot

  • According to http://androidforums.com/faqs/1997-faq-t-mobile-g1.html:

Getting root on your phone is a Linux term for being in total control over the operating system (like Administrator in Windows). Root can edit, add or delete any files you want. People like root because it enables them to install custom software, like on-screen keyboards or edit existing software, like the browser, to make it auto rotate. The downside to having root is because you can really mess your phone up, which invalidates the warranty.

I don't know if they will activate it or not.  I would imagine you can "un-root" it (like you can un-jailbreak an iPhone), but I would look into the specifics for your phone.

  • thanks, i couldnt seem to find an answer that was that straightforward. Im still curious to if it can be activated, the sprint CS doesn't know what rooting is so they don't know for sure until I can give them the ESN number.
