why are the bottoms of my tomatoes brown?

we planted roma tomatoes and they look great when they're green! The minute they start to turn red, the bottoms rot. It's like they've been sitting on them for weeks, but obviously they haven't. What am I doing wrong? I've thrown away every single tomato so far. I'm so sad. I just want some pico, for pete's sake!

Re: why are the bottoms of my tomatoes brown?

  • It's caused by uneven watering--a lot of water, then drying out, a lot of water.  In addition to what pp said, be sure to mulch your plants well.

  • lack of calcium also contributes to blossom end rot.  I add dried crushed egg shells when I plant.
