Insane heat making tomatoes split

The heat is taking a toll on my tomatoes. A lot of them are splitting in the heat. Do you guys just pick your tomatoes earlier during heat spells? I'm thinking if I pick them right as they begin to turn light orange I can salvage them.

As for my okra - it's beyond happy. LOL I only planted two plants and I'm getting enough okra for me and my DD. (H doesn't really eat okra)

i think splitting is caused by irregular watering.  i'm in houston, and i havent' had a problem with splitting.

    Have you seen my monkey?
  • Hmmm. I'm watering reguarly. I water either everyday or every other day. I check the soil everyday before I water. My Early Girl tomatoes aren't splitting, it's my grape tomatoes that are splitting.

ETA: Maybe I'll give them a little more water and see if that helps. I think I'm watering reguarly, but maybe the plants don't agree.

  • Some varieties are more prone to cracking than others. My understanding is that its more overwatering, rather than under, that contributes to the problem.

I'd look up the variety and see if that's a common problem.

This is a good page on cracking tomato issues, but I'm not this technical of a gardener. http://www.agrisupportonline.com/Articles/cracking_in_tomatoes.htm

I water stuff. If it thrives, I am happy. If not, I never plant it again.

  • The large amounts of rain being dumped at one time in my area is causing some cracking.  Have you had a lot of rain?

No. We had a large rain in early May (TN Floods), and a large rain (about 3-4 inches) about 3-4 weeks ago. I didn't have any splitting issues during those times.

Alisha - Thanks for the link. I'll have to see if it's the type of grape tomatoes I planted this year. Like I said, the Early Girls are doing just fine.

  • Stop watering them and see if that helps. Picking sooner probably wouldn't hurt either, but I love my tomatoes as ripe as I can get them.

Even if they have already split, if you pick them right when they split, you can still eat them. You just can't wait, because they rot faster once they are open.

  • We had lots of rain in the last couple of weeks here (Houston- Hi Nital) and only my grape tomatoes split.  the others have been fine.
