fish tacos?

I'm making/trying fish tacos this weekend for the first time because they seem to be all the rage lately.  I found a recipe from Bobby Flay that got great reviews but was curious if any of the cooking afficinados here had any other good suggestions?  I can't make them too spicy because my mom isn't a big fan (she may, in fact, think that ketchup is spicy!Stick out tongue).  I'm also going to make a corn salad because it is finally ready here.  mmm, can't wait!

Re: fish tacos?

  • I love fish tacos like this:  Warm corn tortilla with grilled fish (any kind with a bit of lime juice squeezed on during cooking), some chopped cilantro, guacamole and salsa.  If your mom can't do spicy, you can do cilantro, tomatoes, onions and hot sauce so people can spice it up as they wish.
  • I do what Millie suggested...put all the stuff out and let people use their own discretion with the heat factor.  When I lived in SoCal, fish tacos came with a finely shredded cabbage (kind of like the lettuce on a regular taco).  I also put out a yogurt/sour cream/cilantro mixture and lime slices to squeeze onto the fish even after grilling.  You can use flour tortillas if people don't like corn, and some places make it with fried fish as opposed to grilled.

YUMMMMMMMM.......I love fish tacos.  You can't get good ones in Virginia.  They want to put CHEESE on them...eeeewwww.

My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!
  • Cheese on fish?!  Then again, I don't eat meat, so, whatevs.  Yes, do the cabbage!  Also, if you have access to spicy pickled carrots and onions, add them.  Cabbage and carrots are the only way to go--at least in my Mexican family.
    Matt loves Munkii!!!
  • good tips ladies!  There is quite a decent selection of ethnic foods at my local grocery so I may be able to find some of the more authentic ingredients for these like the pickled carrots.  I was indeed planning on the cabbage too!  I'm kind of excited to experiment with these since I'm trying to get more fish into our life.  We can get some great local fish (there are only 10,000+ lakes here in Minnesota to choose from!) but ocean caught is tougher to come by so it is all frozen.  This seems like a fairly forgiving way to cook some previously frozen fish up!  I'm in a recipe rut lately, probably because its been too dang hot out to turn on the oven!
  • Mmmm, I love fish tacos! It all sounds delicious...

ditto PPs on the guacamole, sour cream, and cabbage- that gives it such a great crunch. And if you're doing corn salad on the side, a little of that would be great in the taco too. I usually put a corn salsa with corn, black beans, red bell pepper, jalapeno, cilantro, cayenne pepper, and honey on mine.

    And cheese?? really?

  • We made these a few months ago... they were fabulous. Now that I've been reminded... might have to make them again :-)
