Agapanthus/Lily of the Nile

Any tips on planting these?  Can we put rubber mulch in the mass plot once we plant them?

Any flower/plants that look good with these?...to plant in the same area?  They are going in the front yard...we have a large area that wraps around our living room window and fireplace.

TIA!

Re: Agapanthus/Lily of the Nile

  • These are my fav! We replaced our box hedges with these in front of our porch. They're beautiful and green and such nice flowers. Bonus - they're cold hardy and super easy to take care of! In our front bed, we added rocks as the mulch and they're doing fine, so rubber mulch should be ok too. We just transplanted straight into the ground and kept a good amount of water on them for the first few weeks.

In our back yard we have some around the pool area too, paired with elephant ear and some of our state wildflower coreopsis for color when the agapanthus aren't blooming.

We have had 1 area in the back yard where some of the leaves turn white and the plant thins out and even 1 died. I keep meaning to ask our local nursery about this, hopefully I can get there this weekend - don't want it to spread.

  • I have one and have not yet gotten a successful bloom. I think it's too shaded...am going to move in the fall and hope for better luck.

Agree w/ pp that coreopsis would look great with them, or maybe some golden colored yarrow....

    Enjoy!
