Is it better?

To turn the AC off when you leave the house or leave it on but at a higher temp?

Which way will cost less?

I thought turning it off would but then it has to work extra hard later to cool the place down.

Your thoughts?

Re: Is it better?

  • Leave it on. When we leave it's at like 80.

  • We used to turn it off, but then the electric company recommended we just increase the temp to 85, b/c shutting it completely off makes it work harder to cool off.

  • leave it on at a higher temp we usually have ours at 80 or 82 during the day then when we get home turn it down to 79-78 =) that is as low CJ will let me go =(

  • We leave it on, but at a higher temp....80 when we are away, and 78 when home. I wouldn't let it go higher than 80 with my dog and cat at home.

  • Good to know! Thanks ladies.

We dont' put it below 80 (in our 1 br apt) but when I leave it turn it all the way up. I thought our bills would be lower than last year but they aren't. I guess I set it for like 85 or so.

  • Leave it on but program for a high temp when you are away.

We have it set at 84 when we aren't home, 80/81 when home and 78 when sleeping (I get super sweaty if it's not under 80).

  • we leave it at 85 when out.

83 when its just lucy and I, DH usually puts it at 84 Sad

I've heard as long as it's only a few degrees either way. If you do more, then your a/c unit has to work too hard to bring it back down and then you defeat the purpose of saving money. We keep it at 80 during the day and 76 at night. I HATE electric bills in the summer!!!

  • Yep, I'm with all the other girls...

When we went away, we left our upstairs at 84 and downstairs at 83.

During the day, we leave the upstairs at 82 and the downstairs at 83 or 84 with fans running too. Our bill wasnt horrible for the size of our house. We actually came in 70$ cheaper then the average house in our area of our size

  • We have a programable thermastat- so depends on time of day- low is 79- high is 85. It steps down or up to each one so there's no big jump either way.

  • I've heard that it's more cost efficient to turn it up just 2-3 degrees when you're not there. Like you said, the AC has to work extra hard when you turn it up more that that.

  • we do the programable thermostats. When we're away its at 83 but then after 8 pm it go's down to 78. I should state that it turns up to 83 at 1pm

we're on the time of use plan through SRP and thats when we're off peak so the AC gets set higher. plus we don't use much power at those times. This saves a lot of money. last month we saved $45 throughout the year it has been over $300 in savings. our house is very well insulated plus we have the sunscreens. they help keep the house cool. so although the AC is set at 83 it never go's over 81. Last year our most expensive electric bill was still under $300 and we have a 2 story home. I think thats pretty good

Oh yay...you have just made my day. The house we have an offer on has the sunscreens and is 2 story. I was terrified for our electric bills but you just eased that fear. Thank you!

  • DH turns it off but I prefer to just turn it up a few degrees. He thinks we save more money turning it off but I HATE coming in from the heat to a hot house. And then it takes forever to cool down even though we have a tiny house.

You are correct!! My husband (A/C guy) gets mad if I turn it up more than a few degrees about our "at home" temp. It will cost you more in the extra energy it takes to satisfy the "at home" temp than it does to maintain a temperature.  So putting it up to 85 and then down to 78 when you get home is not recommended by A/C technicians. (I thought it sounded kinda logical, but hubby says no no!!! lol)

YESSS!!! LOL We were just talking the other day about a store he was at where the guy was turning it OFF at night, and then 72 during the day and didn't understand why it wasn't getting below about 80! DUH!!! LOL He's been getting a few of those lately. :) ANd YES, H talks A/C a LOT. But it's good. We have our own company (but aren't QUITE ready to jump on our own yet!), so I've been learning about all the A/C stuff the past couple summers. I can actual do a full (and very complete) check-up myself, and can diagnose and change a lot of the parts! :-D I fail on the low-voltage wiring, though. Still learning! (But will you ever get me into an attic in July when it's about 140 in there?? Helllllllls no!) Does your FI talk A/C stuff? Especially during the summer, it's almost ALL he talks about! He works fulltime for Weather Masters (small company out of mesa) and then does stuff for our company (Klee's Climate Control) on the side. Good ole A/C biz! haha I've shocked a few A/C guys before as I can keep up (and give input) to almost any A/C conversation! hehe OK, this was a long paragraph, I'm as bad as my hubby! Oh yeah, and your FI, he works for Day and Night, is that right? How long's he worked there? How long's he been in A/C?
