Can/Can't do while pregnant question

Can you or can you not dye your hair while pregnant?  If you cannot, why not?

Google is giving me mixed results.  No flames por favor.

Re: Can/Can't do while pregnant question

  • I *believe* from what I've heard that you aren't supposed to early on in pregnancy, but can in the latter months.

Have no idea what the cut off is, or if this is even valid.

  • People do it (can't bleach) but I now use and will when I'm pregnant, all natural hair dye.

I'm too afraid of using the bad stuff when I'm pregnant or even now for that matter. I believe that anything you put on your body eventually goes through your skin into your blood stream.

Now, you will hear many people say " I did and my baby came out ok." But it's really a personal preference, I think.

  • they used to say that you CAN'T! i think it's simply because of the chemicals that are in the dye.  i really don't know why, honestly.

now more and more people are doing it. I chose NOT to because i just didn't want to risk anything.

  • Not during your first trimester for sure, although, I do believe you can closer to the end of the pregnancy. When I did dye my hair, my sylist back home used the Aveda line, which I know is all natural, and that would probably be the only kind I would have dared to use when I was pregnant. Smile

  • Thank goodness!  I think I can handle no dye during my first trimester, and I will happily switch to natural dye throughout the second and third.  Anything to keep my red hair!!!  lol

I would die if I had to go back to my natural color (dishwater blonde Ick!)

I had no idea you're a natural blonde! I feel like the red suits you so well and am having a hard time picturing that, haha.

  • from my understanding, can not in early pregnancy (first tri)

I would use henna or a vegetable based one if I was going to at all in pregnancy.

  • I did it at 11 weeks, 17 weeks and I'll do it again this weekend.  My doctor said there was no harm in it, just do it in a well ventilated area.

  • There are some dyes you can use while pregnant and some you can't.  Just think that everything you put on your body/skin is absorbed into your blood stream and that gets passed to the placenta.  The side effects might be non-existant, but they may also be harmful.  So when you're pregnant you're not supposed to wear stuff that's loaded with chemicals that could be considered "harmful" in large doses.  So hair dye, some sun screens, some bug sprays, medicinal cream, etc.  I'd even avoid moisturizers that have ingredients you can't pronounce during the first trimester at least (try pure shae butter!).

You even have to be careful of some natural products as some herbs and plants can be bad, too.

But note that if you ask a group of people a question you are going to get a huge variety of answers!  If you take everyone's advice you'd basically need to live in a bubble and eat nothing but whole grains and flax seeds for 9 months!  The best person to ask and who's advice you should follow is your doctor.

Some books/website will tell you not to eat unpasturized cheeses (usually soft cheeses, like goat cheese) and lunch meat contains a bacteria called Listeria.  However, you would have to eat a ton of it to see any effects.

My doctor told me to just eat things like this in moderation- same with fish.  The whole thing about fish and mercury is really overblown- it's basically shark, swordfish and other non-common fish.  Canned tuna and salmon is fine- in moderation.

When you do finally get pregnant you can drive yourself crazy with all of the "don't eat this" and "don't do this".  Go by what your doctor says and you'll be fine.  Really the only thing I avoid is alcohol (although, I could have a glass of wine if DH wouldn't kill me) and raw sushi (I still eat Cali rolls, etc.).

Sushi and wine will be the hardest for me to give up. I've heard about as many mixed things about drinking wine as I have about hair dye. I can easily give up alcohol but I think wine is still a gray area.
