Can you Identify this plant. (PIP)

Both my neighbor and I have our veggie gardens next to our shared chainlink fence. He does not weed and and gets a bunch of volunteer plants from previous years because he just lets everything sit over the winter and then tills it all in the spring.

Currently there is a "vine/climbing" type plant running along the top of our fence from his side. The leaves look like some sort of squash leaves and are about the size of my hand. about every 6-8" there is a about a foot long stem with white flowers. The vine portion also looks squash like. The "fruit" that comes off of the plant is ling green and fuzzy. It's only about as wide in diameter as a finger and the longest is about a foot.

Does anyone have a clue what this could be?

Thanks!

Yeah, zucchini or some other kind of squash.

  • From the look of the picture there are pokies on the fruit, which zucchini do not have.  My husband thinks it is a type of cucumber, perhaps  an english cucumber since it is so long and thin.
  • My first guess was English cucumber too based on the first picture.

Have you picked one?  What does it look like when cut?

  • I'm starting to think cucumber too. Now that I think about it my neighbor had a cucumber plant about there last year. The cukes were about the same color but short and fat. These are volunteer plants of some sort. The one I posted a pic of has started to fatten up a bit and is looking more like a cucumber. I haven't picked any cause all the flowers that have turned to whatever they are are on his side of the fence. There a couple on my side a couple inches long.
  • Yikes....I just found another one on his side of the fence the thing is huge. It's at least 3ft long and about an inch and a half in diameter.
