Possibly relocating to Milwaukee- neighborhoods?

Hello Ladies

My husband and I are thinking of relocating to Milwaukee, pending our decision about a job offer I have. I'm interested in hearing about some of the neighborhood in the downtown area, or those close to the UW campus (he would be starting graduate school there.)  Our rent budget is $1,000/month. We will have two cars to park.  We're used to NYC/NJ square footage (read: tiny) so it doesn't have to be huge, just livable.  We're laid back, no pets as of now.  That's about all I can think of right now. Does anyone have any tips on neighborhoods to check out?  The company I am interviewing with is flying us both out next month, renting us a car and we figured we'd check some places out we heard good things about.

 TIA!

Re: Possibly relocating to Milwaukee- neighborhoods?

  • There are no distinct neighborhoods near UWM, it's just known as the "east side".  The campus is about 6 blocks from the lake, so the closer you get to the lake the more expensive.  Here are the areas I would focus on if we were going to move to that area... east of campus, north of campus, and south east of campus.  Directly south of campus (south of Kenwood Blvd)  is full of undergrad students and lots of parties.  You would see lots of freshman walking around at night looking for the keg parties. :)

There are not many apartment buildings in the area, but there are lots of flats.  If your not sure what that is...it's a large two story house with at least two separate living spaces.  One on top and one on bottom.  Some of the larger houses have 3 or 4 apartments in one house.  I would stick to a house with only one other apartment in it.  You should be able to get a flat for $1000 and it would probably be between 1000 and 1500 sq. feet.

Depending on how close you want to be to UWM, I would highly suggest you look at places in Shorewood.  ( suburb just north of Milwaukee) -minutes away from UWM.  There are many more apartment buildings in Shorewood and you should be able to find something comfortable for $1000.

    Hope this helps!

  • Make sure that the place you find includes parking. i agree that Shorewood is a great neighborhood (especially since its quieter than some of the areas closer to campus), but they have some of the strictest parking policies in the entire area.?
  • Thank you!  I was looking on the map they gave me and does anyone have any input on this Whitefish Bay area?  Geographically it looks right above Shorewood.  Is this another area to consider?

    Thanks!

  • Yes it is right by Shorewood. It's a very nice area. I believe it's really pricey, but I could be wrong.

  • Whitefish Bay is also very nice.  One of the nicest (and priciest) areas around Milwaukee.  You are looking at about a 10-15 minute drive to UWM from WFB.  There are a number of nice apartments and one to check out is operated by Post Management.  Also.... check out Parkside At Estabrook.  It's an apartment building on Lydell Ave and Hampton Ave.  Stay away from the apartment buildings ON Hampton east of I-43.  DH and I lived in one and it was not a good experience.
