Plan Our Next Vacation

We're starting to plan our next big vacation for May 2011.  I like to get in the mindset really early on so I can plan leisurely, and also I need to know what I'm saving for.

Money isn't entirely a big deal as we can plan around saving more if need be.  But in general, I'd like to know what you would do and why.

Option 1 - Alaskan Cruise.  This was our initial honeymoon plan, but we never ended up going because I had just started a new job.  This would most likely be the most affordable option.

Option 2 - Northeastern Canada/U.S. Cruise.  Canadian island hopping at it's best.  Visiting the land of Anne of Green Gables and Nova Scotia (no one hates Nova Scotia)...

Option 3 - Germany.  I love Germany, like really love, love it there.  We would be going to see as much as we could, but Bavaria is my main goal as I've never visited that portion before.  If we did this trip it would be DHs first European experience.

Option 4 - Throw caution to the wind and go to Egypt.  My dream trip, but DH isn't sold on it since it would be the most expensive option.

**Keep in mind, there is a very small chance of me being pregnant by then (3 months pg at the VERY most) if all of our cards fall in place perfectly this year - which is unlikely.

Re: Plan Our Next Vacation

  • Alaskan Cruise!!! Unless you really can swing Egypt then I say do that. That's the craziest one and if your plan to start TTC next year, you might not be able to go there for a very long time once a baby comes.

Sorry, I guess I'm really not that much help. haha

  • If you can swing Egypt then I say go for that for a couple of reasons...
    a) you probably wont be doing this with a baby so if you don't go now, it could be a while
    b) well, this kind of goes with a, but if it is the most expensive one, again after a baby is born it would cost even more.  LoL...

If you can't sell him on it, then I'd go with Germany. Get your husband to a place he has never been and have fun!! This trip would be much easier sans kids as well.

I'd save the two cruises for later. You can do both of those cheaply with kids so I'd save them for vacations you want to go on when you do have a little one (or two) running around.

  • If it were me, I'd probably pick the Alaskan cruise. Mostly because I love cruises, but also because you said it was your original honeymoon plan (make it a babymoon instead?!).

Of course, everyone else makes excellent points about factoring in where you want to go before you have kids, although I don't necessarily think having kids means you couldn't go on an awesome trip, just the two of you (Mike and I are planning on taking a fabulous, sans-kid vaca for our fifth anniversary, and we may even do a cruise next fall if my mom can come out and stay with the little guy for a week).

Ditto.  I did an Alaska cruise a few years ago- it was fun, but would be my last pick out of those choices.  It's also very family friendly, so I'd save that for when you have a LO with you.  Probably the same for the other cruise- cruises are fairly easy for family traveling.  Get the overseas travel out of the way now, while you still can!

  • I vote Egypt.  Like PP said, once a bambino is born, what is the likelihood of you going?
  • Woo hoo!  I can't wait to tell DH that some of you are on my Egypt train!

  • Well, I have only ever done the Alaskan cruise, but it was AMAZING!!!!  I highly recommend it.  Best vacation I have ever taken!  If you do this, you may want to start south and go northbound.  We did the opposite way, and it seemed like the most beautiful scenery (although all of it was amazing) was the first part of the trip.  I think it would be really cool to build up to the really spectacular stuff.

Oh, and if you can do it, swing over to Victoria for a few days too (we landed in Vancouver and took a ferry over there).  We did that and had a wonderful time!  I love it over there!

  • i would love to go to egypt. i vote that, for reasons already mentioned and because it will be awesome

    This!

This x2!  I did the Alaskan cruise with my folks back in the day (I think I was 10 or 12).  Totally something you can do with kids, cruises are usually very kid friendly.
