Name Change Woes

Hey all!

I recently visited the social security office with the goal of:

1) Taking my husband's last name

2) Moving my maiden name as my middle name (never had a middle name before)

I was told I couldn't do #2 since that was a separate process altogether. So I just did #1 and went on my way. I'm still interested in adding my maiden as my middle name though.

How do you accomplish this? I can't find any formal documentation on how this is done in Florida.

And I'm a bit peeved too, because a friend of mine did it at the social security office under the same situation and was told she could "do whatever she wanted" with her name. Did I just get a crappy person helping me at the SS office?

Re: Name Change Woes

  • I was able to make my maiden name my middle name at the social security office.  I hear that it all depends on who you get at these bureaucratic offices.
  • That's weird, when I went to the SS office to change my name they asked me if I wanted to keep my middle name or use my maiden name. I went to the West Palm Beach office.

Did they explain to you what you had to do to change it?

  • I didn't change my middle name but I was told that I could do it if I wanted to.  This was when I went to the Social Security Office.  I went to the one in Vero Beach.

  • I was asked there as well. I didnt change it though. I would call them back and ask someone for help.
  • I wanted to do the same, make my maiden my middle and was told no.  The reason I was given is that marriage only changes your last name.  I ended up doing a double last name, without the hyphen.  I don't like it and I'm thinking of changing my name to my original "plan."  Basically you fill out the forms for a name change, pay a fee of $400.  A few weeks later you have to show up to court and that's it.  Then of course you need to change your name on everything again.  Here's the page with the forms, you need to scroll down to 12.982.

  • I had no problem changing my middle name to my maiden name.

I did it on my driver license first, so when I went to SS, I just showed them my license and that was it.

Maybe you could try to get your driver license changed first?

This is where I was told no, so I was stuck when I went to SS.  Since she already changed her name due to marriage I doubt she can't do anything now other than a full "adult name change."  Let me know if you end up doing it, I'm still on the fence on this one.

  • I was able to change it as well i kept my maiden name they just put it as a middle name.

I havent change my name with the lisence cause they are hassle and i'm waiting to finally move to change it in. but thats werid that they didnt allow you put it as the middle name.
