Running FAIL

I've decided to be ambitious and start running, or lets be realistic jog/walking.  I started the Couch to 5k this morning, and I'm SO out of shape its not even funny!

Any tips from runners (Laina, I'm looking at you!)?

Re: Running FAIL

  • I tried the same plan. It was actually really great. I ended up getting a slap on the hand by my dr. cause I have back problems and I'm not supposed to run. OOPS!

Keep up the good work. You have to start somewhere, right??

  • i asked my H because he is big into running and i am sooo not. he suggested the "telephone pole" method... walk to one and then run to the next then walk to the next and then run to the next and continue that way for a few weeks until you're comfortable. then start walking to one and running the next two... etc. he said you really want to start out slow so you don't get hurt and discouraged. good luck!

  • I wish I could help you, but I've never been able to get into running.  Of course, now that I'm not allowed to work out at all for a while because of my recent back issues, I'm blowing up like a balloon. It's really kind of depressing :(

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

Hello! Smile When I started running (about 4 years ago) I don't think the C25K was out. I've heard awesome things about it, so definitely keep it up!

When I started, I just took things nice and slow. The first run I did with DH, I couldn't go more than 1/4 mile before I got winded. I just slowly increased my distances and my time outside running and I ran my first 5k about a year after I started running.

I also did the Hal Higdon training program when I trained for my first half marathon. That was pretty much the only "structured" training that I did. A lot of my running just came from trial and error. I've also discovered that I am built more for endurance and less for speed. I can run 14-15 miles without stopping at a steady pace, but put in a 5k and I can barely break 9 minute miles.

I'm currrently blogging about my training to the Maine Marathon, if you want to check it out. LIS.

Good luck with the running!! Let me know if you have any other questions!
