S/O Raw milk

Those of you who drink raw milk, what are your reasons? I have a strong food safety background (and am currently a health inspector) and I was just wondering why you choose raw. I just can't see myself drinking raw milk knowing the potential risks.

Re: S/O Raw milk

  • I drank it growing up because we milked our own cow. I think my mom just wasn't in the habit of home pasteurizing.

Personally, I didn't find any particular benefit. I wouldn't buy it.

  • let me start off by saying, i drink homogenized, pasteurized, organic milk.

off the top of my head, some of the benefits of raw milk are that they contain more omega-3s & it's more easily digested for those with lactose intolerance.  they supposedly also contain more vitamins/minerals/enzymes/good bacteria than conventional milk.

from my understanding, it can be safe to drink if you know the farmer & their HAACP practices.

have you ever tasted raw milk?  i think it tastes like eating grass.  + i'm with you on the food safety risks (i'm a registered dietitian & can't really recommend this to my patients).

ETA: ooh & speaking of raw milk, this is from one of my favorite food blogs (marion nestle) who touched on this topic today: http://www.foodpolitics.com/2010/07/food-safety-what-about-pasteurized-milk/

  • I bought a herdshare because raw milk is the best for making cheese. I never intended to drink it - or planned to pasteurize it at home - but I did some research on the health benefits and safety and am confident that my farmer is very careful so I do use it without pasteurizing.
  • I haven't gotten my hands on any yet, but I am hoping to soon.  My reason is for making cheese too.  I've tried a few times with local, pasteurized milk and it just doesn't work because I think the farms heat it up too high.

  • I am a supporter of raw milk, but I only drink it occasionally since its $12/gallon here (and hard to come by).  My reasons are:  pasteurized milk is a processed food, and I try eat food in its most natural (unprocessed) state. I also believe it's more nutritious.

Here is a website dedicated to promoting raw milk.  While it's biased of course, it has a lot of info that someone who supports raw milk would probably agree with.

Oh and in regards to safety:  I believe the benefits outweigh the risks.  I trust a food from a local known source much more than a mass produced industrial source.

This, I was going to suggest that site. As well as this post from a blog I occasionally read. I grew up on raw milk and still have it today (I don't drink milk in any form, though, just not a fan. But like it with cereal and use it in recipes) I wouldn't buy just any raw milk though, never from a factory farm or a farm that does not pasture their cows.
