To all the renters...

How much do you pay for rent and what does it include (heat/electric etc.)? Do you have a washer/dryer hookup? I'm just curious. I wanna know if we're getting a good deal. I found a 2 bedroom, fairly modern and a decent size with a washer/dryer (no utilities included) for $1500 a month and was wondering if we were getting a good deal. TIA...

Re: To all the renters...

  • Sounds pretty darn good to me!

We have a (small) 2 bedroom (they're both only 7ft 7in wide :( ), washer/dryer, 15ft ceilings, 5 skylights (one of which is in our bedroom closet...), very little closet space, no utilities included and we pay $1600. :) But we can't have pets and can't paint...yet...i plan on asking at our 3yr mark in March...

  • Interesting that you posted this, because the H and I are considering moving from our 1 bedroom/1 bathroom where we pay $1950 (with hot water & heat included, no washer dryer) to a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom with washer dryer, balcony & HW and H included for $1800...we were wondering the same thing regarding the deal...We're in Westchester though, so that might make a bit of a difference...
  • Sounds pretty good.

we pay more 2400, have a washer and dryer in the unit (owned by landlord), don't pay heat, but do pay electric bill.  So the cheaper rent should make up for having to put our for the washer and dryer.

Where exactly is this?  I'm in Chelsea so we pay a lot more for a lot less...$2200 for a one bedroom, good kitchen, small everything else, heat/hot water included, Laundry in basement, fantastic location though.

We're currently on a 15 month trip around the world!

  • mrsde, that's a good deal in brooklyn, but aren't you in staten island?   i would think you'd get more for your money there.

we were paying $1800 for 2 good sized bedrooms, the ability to have pets, and pretty much do whatever we wanted to an apartment that was a brand new gut-reno when we moved in.  (right on the edge of park slope, might i add.)

  • Sorry ladies, I should have specified...yes, I'm in Staten Island, so you definitely can't compare it to Manhattan. But, I would have thought the other boroughs would be comparatively close? hmmm...what do I know? I'm a first time renter. lol Thanks for the input tho'. =)

  • Eh, honestly it sounds a bit high to me.  I haven't looked in a while, but in my head a 2BR on SI without utilities should be more around $1100-1200.

  • We are in Williamsburg, living in a 4-room railroad style apartment in a 6-family house. Originally belonged to DH's grandfather, he's lived here his whole life. The house was sold to an "outsider" about 6 years ago. We were paying family rate of $200 per apartment for the two bottom floor apartments. Now our rent is $1000 per month for one apartment. The other rents are $1500-1800 a month for four rooms. In our area, rents can go up to $3000 or so, depending on the building.

All the  apartments were gut-renovated. We were given a kitchen door leading directly to backyard (replacing one window). We opted for more cabinets and counter space in leiu of a washer/dryer. The laundromat is right across the street, so that's not a problem.  We pay for electricity and gas. We have full access to the yard and basement storage bins but must do building "super" chores for the cheaper rent. We put out the garbage cans, maintain the hallway, shovel show and do the occasional small fix-it job.

I can't complain.  It's still like living in a family house because we can do whatever we want. The landlord lives elsewhere.

Yea, I think it's a little high too, but now that I see what's out there, I'll pay it. There aren't too many nice ones out there...at least from what I've seen so far. =/

  • I think it depends on where you are, if you are in Brooklyn or Queens, I don't know that price range. For Manhattan, SIGN ME UP. we pay 2800 a month for our apartment, now its in a new building and has all the lux aminities one can ask for. The only place I know of that is a get alot for your money in nice accomodations is in Hoboken. I have friends there that have amazing places for that price range.
