cat question

This is for anyone who works with animals and/or is knowledgable about felines. I know there are a few :)

DH and I just noticed that Lily has some small bumps behind her left ear. They feel like 'bites' or pimples. We can feel them when we pet her but they are pretty tough to try to get a good look at because of her thick hair. A quick search on google has shown me there could be a variety of causes for them...

This is our first pet ever on our own, and we've only had her since April. I want to be sure she is okay, but I also don't want to overreact. She's been sick once already-she had a flare up from the feline herpes virus shortly after we adopted her.

Should we take her to vet right now, or wait and see if they go away?  Any thoughts?

Re: cat question

  • Monkey (and other cats I have had in the past) gets those little rough feeling spots sometimes too. Usually, Monkey gets then on the tips of her ear and at the base of her tail. I know when I scratch them for her, she kind of goes nuts (like she enjoys it) and usually they go away after a few days.

Now, Lucy, my family kitty...she used to get them BAD. And I think mom said her vet told her it was an allergy of some kind. So I have no idea!

I would say, if they don't seem to be bothering her, or causing pain, then give it a few days and just see if they go away on their own.

  • Lucy would get them when she went outside, the vet said she had an allergic reaction to flea bites and we had to get her cortizone shots as I recall....this allergy was really bad for a period of time and then went away on it's own.
  • It may be diet related.  Miss Kitty has food allergies and when we first discovered it she was scratching and balding on her rump and there were lots of scabs.  Could there be some sort of irritant in the house that is bothering her?  Fleas? New cleaner you are using.  Then again it could be the herpes flare.  If it bothers her or gets worse, you might want to take her to a vet.

  •

Lily is an indoor kitty, so I'll have to think about potential indoor allergens...and I have heard about the diet possibility.  so far, the spots don't bother her at all, so that's good. I was also wondering if it could be related to the fact she has herpes....hmm.

Thanks for the input though everyone :)

  • There is a good possibility that it could be related to her herpes!!  Keep a good eye on her.....if it does not get any better you can always run her by the vet and let them look at it :)
