We're doing a latin-style pig roast for my 30th birthday next month. I'm not sending the invitation out as a birthday party, just a pig roast, so I'm not sure I want to do a birthday cake, even though most people know it's my birthday. I'm not sure what do to for dessert that would be easy, though. Any ideas? I thought about flan or tres leches cake to keep with the latin theme, but we are roasting the pig ourselves, and I don't want to add so much work to the day, and I'm not crazy about those desserts anyway.
Any ideas? TIA!
Re: Dessert ideas for party
the tres leche cake would be very easy & you can do it the night before. When i'm pressed for time, I usually just make a betty crocker cake, let it cool then add the tres leche... combination of cream, evaporated milk & condensed milk with a splash of rum. then either vanilla icing on top or whip some cream with sugar for a whip cream icing... if you're not crazy about tres leche or flan... how about a guava cheesecake? again, if you don't want to make it from scratch, buy the plain cheesecake already done and get a can of guava paste and make a topping with that. another idea is a dulce de leche cheesecake.. buy the cheesecake already made & you can find dulce de leche in the Goya aisle & pour it on top; arroz con leche (rice pudding)? I'm sure you can find some recipes for that. If you're trying to keep with the latin theme, thats really all I can think of! Are there any latin bakeries in your area? if so, maybe they have empanadas with guava & cheese.. thats common... good luck, let us know what you decide on!
What about something like Bunuelos (homemade or store bought)?
Are you having the party in lieu of a birthday party? Will people feel awkward if a birthday cake suddenly appears? If you don't have any objection to drawing attention to the birthday aspect and you don't think your guests would mind, I say go for it and get yourself a cake
Ooh! Guava cheese empanadas! I might go that route. Unfortunately, I have no latin bakeries here. That's why I'm doing a latin-style party. So tired of everything being smoked.
I'm still debating about the birthday cake. I mean, I'll only turn 30 (for real) once, right? Plus, ordering a cake is so much easier than having to cook more (especially with an 8-month-old running around!).
The reason I don't want it to be 'officially' a birthday party is that I don't want people to bring gifts. I just want to have a good time with friends. But I might go for it.
Thanks for all the ideas!

if you have no bakeries, you can either make the empanadas with the frozen goya pastry rounds or with phyllo dough.
good luck!
