For those with non-furry kids...
Do you have a college savings plan set up? Does anyone mind telling me how you're saving for your kids' college expenses? 529 plan? Some other alternative?
Huge thanks coming your way!
Re: For those with non-furry kids...
Not yet but once we start getting money from the GI Bill, we probably will start one.
What's a 529 plan??
Here is some info on the 529 plan. Each state has their own. I don't know a ton about it, but basically it's a tax deferred plan that can be used for education costs (tuition, books, etc). I *think* that if your kid ends up not going to college, you can withdraw the money but then have to pay taxes on it. Anyone know if that's right? And I guess the money is not taken into consideration for awarding financial aid, which is a benefit of it, too.
We are doing savings bonds for the first three years and then setting up a 529 once we move here to AZ permanently. We buy a one hundred dollar bond every paycheck. We double our money but they take FOREVER to mature, that's why only for three years. But we just can't beat the return on our investment. In the three years we'll have almost $8000 and it only cost us $4000.
Wow, I never thought of that. Great idea, thanks!
