Pansies would be good in the sunny area. What zone are you in?

  • Oh sorry I live in Nebraska.

  • We plant the early blooming spring bulbs(daffodils, tulips, hyacinth, crocus and even some lillies and iris) in late fall. I'm in Kansas. Check your local Lowes/Home Depot or even K-mart for bulbs to be planted this fall that will bloom in the spring. They should be showing up in stores soon and your local store should have a selection appropriate for you area.

Thanks, I really have no idea where to start. This is our first home and I didn't get around to planting this year. I want something that will come back every year.

  • When your bulbs come up in the spring, flower and then the flowers die, cut only the flower stems down to ground level. If you let the leaves grow, die naturally and THEN cut them back, you will have amazing tulips, daffodils and hiacynths for years and years :)
  • Now is the time to plant iris (late summer August-ish) for the spring. They thrive anywhere. People will joke and tell you that you can throw an iris bulb (technically a rhizome but whatever) up against a rock and it will take root.

    Good luck!

  • We are new to gardening and enjoyed tulips and hyacinths this past spring. americanmeadows.com is where we get all of our bulbs and they have all turned out great! We're currently enjoying an explosion of gladiolus blooms. :)

I have irises growing on cement... there at the bottom of one of my downspots for the rain gutters...I've chopped quite a few of the edges off and moved them to other spots around my yard.
