We just got back home last night at 2:30am from being out of town for the past 2 days and the first thing I did when I got into the house was head for the bathroom (we drove for our trip and I had to go pee really badly). Then I step in and my feet are soaked--our bathroom was flooded! At first, I was thinking, "OH CRAP, what happened?!? Did our toilet pipe burst?" Then I looked up and saw our bathroom ceiling drooping from water damage. Everything was soaked in our bathroom--from our towels to my pads to the toilet paper. Needless to say, our fairly-new Tanita body fat scale was also busted.
Turned out new neighbors moved in upstairs and didn't get a chance to get shower curtains for their tub...made a leaky mess when they took a shower. Part of me can't believe it leaked through their floor through our ceiling though...how much water did they let get out of the tub?!?
Re: Ugh
Exactly!! That sounds like WAY too much water to just be splash-over from the tub. If that was the case, it seems like they'd be pretty much flooding their bathroom every time they showered -- unless there's a crack in their floor that allows the water to drain right down to your ceiling.
How long has it been since someone's lived there? If it's been awhile, I wonder if one of the water or drain pipes cracked/burst when it started getting used again. Do you have a landlord or maintenance contact you can call to check it out?

The last tenant moved out less than a month ago. Maintenance came and cut out the damage from the ceiling. I can see a crack between two flooring tiles, where the water must have came through. I guess that's what happened...I'm calling insurance now to see what they will pay for us...
