Chipotle?

Husband and I (and 2 dogs) are heading on a 2-day road trip to the east coast.  I am going to pack some cut up veggies from our CSA but I know we're going to have to stop and eat.  I have heard that Chipotle serves "food with integrity".   Does this look legit? I am a little wary because after switching to responsibly-raised meat in our own lives, I see how expensive it is (but worth it). I just find it hard to believe that a chain-sized restaurant could really afford to do this.  I am wondering if it is just an advertising ploy.  Has anyone had any experience with the company?

Re: Chipotle?

  • Honestly, I can't speak of their responsibility, but it's just darn good food.  Better than most fast food places.
  • I am not sure of the exact details but I do know when a company this large claims to have responsibly raised meats, they probably do. Too much of a risk to make claims that large that they cant stand on.
  • I know the Chipotle near me gets it's pork from Polyface Farms (the one featured in Food, Inc) which is about 50 miles a way. So I know that's beyond organic and local -- so I figure that's pretty good!

It's likely your best bet while traveling, I would think.

  • Their prices are higher than most "fast food" places around us, so I actually think from that aspect alone, it's plausible. ;) And besides, the guacamole and salty chips are totally worth it. :D

  • DH works for them.  Their claims are legit.

He was just telling me the other day that they're getting lettuce at his store from a local farm (actually our CSA farm).

    Yes

I had half a burrito for dinner last night, and the other half for lunch today.

  • if you are going to be on the east coast see if you can find an elevation burger. and for "fast food" i think chipotle is pretty good.

  • Yay, thanks, guys, for the good news!  I've never eaten at one, so now I'm excited.  And thanks for the recommendation of Elevation Burger too.

  • We most often eat at Chipotle instead of other fast food places exactly for this reason!
