day trip from hampton roads area?

H and I were possibly thinking about taking a day trip this weekend and need some recommendations. We're in the Norfolk area and are willing to drive 1-2 hours to get there. Don't want to stay the night, just explore the area a little bit. Any ideas? TIA!

Re: day trip from hampton roads area?

  • Richmond is a fun place to explore. There's quite a bit of historical stuff in the city, and the new Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is supposed to be awesome. Downtown is fun, and you can have a fun afternoon shopping and exploring Carytown. The Byrd Theater, a historic movie palace in Carytown, shows second run movies, and I believe they still play the big Wurlitzer before weekend shows. :)

Or, if you're looking for something a little closer, you could explore Colonial Williamsburg and the Yorktown Battlefields. Have fun!

  • I recommend an overnight for Richmond personally - there is a TON to do there.

My husband and I frequently go to Col. Williamsburg for day trips; just walking Duke of Gloucestor St. is amazing (if you like history - and even if you don't!) I recommend getting a pass so that you can also tour the buildings and walk the grounds of the Governor's Palace. Dine in Merchant's Square or one of the nearby restaurants.  Blue Talon is yummy but on the pricey side, plus there are several other restaurants to choose from. Or even check out the taverns in Col. Wmsbg itself - it can a fun experience!

Also, Yorktown Battlefield is pretty neat - the vistiro center pretty much sits right on the river so you could even go down to the "downtown" area The Riverwalk and dine at one of the restaurants there or walk the beach - it all sits pretty close to the Coleman Bridge. Not quite as much to do at Yorktown but it is quiet if that it what you are seeking out. Drive the Colonial Parkway for a scenic drive through the area and it will even direct you to Col. Wmsbg if you decide you want to do both in one day.

Now if you're up for the beach, take a day trip to the Outer Banks and have a beach day, check out the light house. This is something that is on our "To Do" list. Will probably check it off in the next few months though.

  • I will cast my vote for Richmond as well.  You could keep it relatively inexpensive by staying at a hotel outside of the city and travel into the city.  The VMFA has an exhibit right now on Tiffany Glass.  Capital Ale house is having live music this weekend, and the beer selections is always wonderful.  The Historical Society is now free all the time, but on Sundays the movie they have (Grant vs. Lee is the tittle I think) is also free.  It's supposed to be a gorgeous weekend, Carytown will be hopping.  And the Firshouse Theater is preforming "Rent" right now, and all they are asking in return is a donation.  There's a ton going on up here this weekend. • I live in Williamsburg and it can be a lot of fun. Busch Gardens is great for an adventure or Water Country. Williamsburg/Yorktown of course has tons of history and plantations which are fun to go to but over all will take more than just a day to go to. Around Williamsburg there are many great place to dine in the Merchant Square area. But I also enjoy going to botanical gardens and Norfolk has a great one where once you want time to sit and relax you can watch the plane taxi off at the airport next to it and Richmond also has a great garden call Maymont. With the weather being cooler enjoy the outsides if you can and then do the inside stuff later in the winter whe you are more bored.
  • Thanks ladies! Sounds like Richmond or Williamsburg are the places to be! I appreciate all the information :)
