Furbaby question... (PIP)

I have a Jack Russell whose name is Daphanie.  She lives full time with my parents mostly because they don't want pet's in our house (that we rent from them) full time, but we will take for the weekend when they go out of town.  So now that she is getting, she just turned 9 (human years) this last May 3.

So a couple months ago while at my parents house I noticed she had a loose tooth and today my dad dropped her off since they are going to Vegas for the weekend and while she was napping on my lap I notices said tooth is now completely gone.  And it looks like one maybe two more are loose.  What does this mean? Should I ask my parents to switch her to soft food? I am so sad and upset because she is technically my dog and I feel as though I have not taken care of her properly given the circumstances.  My poor daphners I just love her so much and it is driving me crazy that she is getting older and won't be here forever =(  But at the same time I don?t know how well my suggesting a different type of food or a visit to the vet would go?

ETA: I thought I would include a couple pic's of my daphner doggy...

  • First of all...Daphanie is stinking adorable!!!!

I would take her to the vet....just like people, as we get older our teeth can rot without proper care. Most likely they would suggest sedating her and doing a thorough cleaning, and extracting the loose teeth, along with any that are potentially rotting.

Once that is done, then you can assess whether or not to switch to a softer food catered to seniors, as well as supplements such as plaque off, which is a seaweed based powder that is sprinkled on their food that regulates the PH in their mouth to help prevent any more teeth issues.

Whatever you decide to do, I would definately get a vets opinion....but she is absolutely adorable!!!

  • How is the quality of her teeth?  If her teeth are covered in plaque it is completely normal that her teeth are falling out.

I wouldn't suggest switching her to wet food because that will just promote the further growth of her gingivitis.

  • Another thing to consider is that any gum/teeth diseases can lead to heart issues, just like in humans....just another reason to have be seen by a vet Wink

  • Thank you, I think she is pretty darn cute =) I just love her to pieces and she is currently sleeping right next to me... I think that is what we will need to do, take her to the vet, she should live until 15 years or more so it is just concerning me that she is only 9 so I want to have her here as long as possible.

  • Be prepared though, Dental treatments at the vet can cost upwards of $900.

Just about every other day I have clients that are complaining that they just spend a ton of money for teeth extractions and scrapings.

I am neurotic about my dogs teeth.  Both of my JRT's and Boxer have spotless teeth.  They constantly get bones and their teeth are brushed at least twice a week.

    It works pretty damn good!

Umm, there a few with plaque, I know they take her to get groomed, like teeth and ears cleaned and bathed and nails clipped but i am not sure on how often that is (they bathe her at home as well).  But they only really take to the vet for shots and this one time something got stuck in the pad on her paw =( I feel like a horrible fur baby mama... I wish we could just have her at our house full time =(

  • I would start out with that. Personally, I am not a huge fan of Vets and try to do things myself and as holistic as possible.

The teeth cleaning gel is really nice because it is all natural and you can just squirt it in her mouth and leave it.  Since her teeth are loose that would be perfect, because you don't want to brush them and loosen them up more.

It has to be done every day for 30 days to see any type of improvement, so you will have to make sure your parents do it.

  • I am with the other girls that I would just take her to the vet.

Since she is your dog, you should just do it. Not your parents. I am assuming you are buying the food and such? If so, go with all the vets recs and buy the things that the vet tell you to, and give them to your parents. It is not like you are putting them out, or expecting them to pay out of pocket. They just fill in and do the "mommy" things when you arent there...

As PP said, they might not want you to switch to softer food because it could cause more problems, but I am sure that your parents will work with you if the vet reccomends something and you buy it and bring the stuff there.
