Squash plant - growing out of control

So this is my first year with a garden and now that everything is in full bloom i didn't realize how much space my squash were going to need/take up.  I planted two plants next to each other and they are growing like crazy but I have only gotten two squash from one plant so far.  I am about to take up one of them because it is over growing and getting in the way of my tomato plant.

If you are growing squash and planted them in May how many squash have you gotten.  Do you think I am not getting any because they are two close together.  Can I clip back some of the leaves so they are out of the way of my tomato plant.  At this point I would rather have the tomatoes than the squash.

Any advice would be helpful.  TIA

Re: Squash plant - growing out of control

  • Squash are huge and they sort of migrate.  I would leave two plants in because it really does help with pollination.  Speaking of which, you can hand pollinate your female flowers to ensure that they produce.  These are the ones with the little baby squash at the base of the flower.  How big are your tomato plants?  Mine are large enough that even the highest squash leaves are not really impacting fruiting (fruiting is higher up on the tomato plant now).  If you are concerned, I think you can clip some of the leaves, just don't take out more than a quarter of the leaves or you might hurt the plant.
  • how do you hand pollinate cucumbers?

  • If the squash are on the ground they are no interfering with the tomatos, just let them be.
