My DH will turn the big 3-0 at the beginning of October. All of his friends are in their mid thirties and my friends are mid-to-late 20s. He has said he doesn't really know what to do for his birthday but his friends have mentioned to me taking him golfing that day. I was thinking of surprising him with a little cook-out at our house when he got home from the golf outing.
Has anyone ever planned a surprise party? If so, any suggestions?

I really suck at staying pregnant
Surprise parties, in my experience, can be tricky. It depends a lot on (1) how suspicious the guest is/how much they would WANT a surprise party, and (2) how soon before the event you invite everyone/if anyone would accidentally spill the beans.
I've found the best surprise parties are the ones planned by a small group/committee. Like, get one or two of his buddies in on the deal so they know when to have him home from golfing. Plant a not-so-subtle idea in his head like "Oh, buddy A's friend and I were going to go shopping while you guys golfed, why don't we just have them stay for dinner?" That way, it won't be weird when his buddy follows him into the house. But rather than one extra person there, you'll have everyone waiting.
Also, if you live somewhere where it's going to be impossible to hide the cars, have everyone be outside to surprise him as he drives up.
