Who's Been to Europe?

There's a chance that DH and I will get an opportunity to go to Europe sometime next year.  Right now, we're just kind of playing with the idea...trying to figure out if it would be feasible for us.

I definitely want to see Paris, but I was wondering if any of you ladies who've been there had any suggestions on where to go, what to see, and where to stay?

We're looking at staying over there for 1-2 weeks.  DH's aunt and uncle are living near Ramstein Germany....near the military base.  They've invited us to stay with them while we're over there...that's how this whole thing got started.

I don't know if we should stay in Paris for a while, and they go stay in Germany with them....or if we should stay in Paris for a few nights...then hope over to London...then go somewhere else, etc.  I'd kinda like that, b/c we'd see more.

There's so much to see over there, that it's kind of overwhelming!

Re: Who's Been to Europe?

  • I've never been to europe, but I think it would be really cool to do a train tour... stay a few days in germany, hop on a train to paris, then london. A coworker of mine has a daughter that was an au pair in a suburb outside of paris last year and they did something similar to that, but they spent some time in italy as well. She said it was amazing!
  • Oh, me!  Me!  I actually did the whole 4 weeks backpacking around Europe years ago.  We got a rail pass and were able to pretty much go wherever we wanted.  I guess it really depends on what you are looking for - we saw a lot of the big cities (London, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Florence, Rome, Venice) and some smaller towns too (San Sebastian, some little town on the French Riviera).

Now that I've been, I look at it this way - although all the big cities have cool things to see, they are still big cities - too many people, and too many tourists.  I actually enjoyed the smaller cities/towns too - you get more of the culture and I just liked it more.

O.k. - my favorites were San Sebastian (it's right next to Pamplona, Spain), the French Riviera, and Switzerland (can't remember what town we stopped in - it's been over 10 years).  We took the train thru Germany and it looked absolutely beautiful - I wish we could have spent some time there.

Sorry - feel like I'm babbling - hope I answered at least a part of your question.....

  • How exciting!  My Dad is from Italy and I have gone there many, many times.  Let me know if y'all end up planning to visit Italy and I'll give you some details!
  • I've been---but it's been about 10 years. I went with a group of students and we went through a travel agency. We went to Paris, London, Lucerne and Germany. I loved Lucerne--- it was my favorite. I liked London more than Paris but that's because at the time I was super obsessed with Prince William, so....
  • I spent a summer studying abroad in Spain.  While there I went all through Spain, Portugal, and France.  I have to say I HATED Paris.  The big touristy things (eifel tower, Louvre, Notre Dame, etc) were really neat but the city itself is dirty and very hard to navigate.  I would reccoment seeing all the big things but I wouldn't make Paris a big part of my trip.  the smaller cities in France are to die for- they are so beautiful and rustic.  I really enjoyed them.  I also loved Spain.  I lived in a city called Salmanca but went all over the country- Madrid, Pamplona, San Sebastian, Barcelona.  I cannot say enough good things about Spain.  Although the language barrier was tough I still thought it was amazing.  Portugal has some of the prettiest beaches in Europe!!  It is a little out of the way from the rest of Europe though!

I would LOVE to go to Germany though!!!!  You will have to let me know how it is!

  • Thanks everyone!

Lisa - Backpacking around Europe for 4 whole weeks sounds absolutely amazing...I wish we could do that!

Jaime - I was worried about that....I've heard before that Paris is dirty and the people are rude.  I think we'll probably end up there for a few days to see the main stuff and move on...

Monica - I definitely want to see Italy!  Venice is tops on my list...however, I've heard that the smell can be overpowering...is this true?  What areas in Italy would you recommend?  Anywhere in particular that is a good place to stay?

  • I?ve been to Europe a few times.  The first time I went- I went to school in Barcelona.  The city (and area) is absolutely GORGEOUS.  I would go back in a heartbeat!

I also went to Europe with my best friend after we graduated college and we visited several countries via train.  We started in London, then took the Eurostar to Paris for a few days and then thru Belgium and on to Amsterdam.  We had a blast!!  I went back to Paris in June of 2006 for a week with my grandmother but my morning sickness hit the first day we were there and I was in bed the remainder of the trip.  I was sooo sick I couldn?t go anywhere- I thought I had a horrible stomach virus at the time!!  So I got to spend a lovely 6 nights at the Hotel du Louvre.  J

  • I've been to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France.  I could give you some rec's but I was 13 when I went but there's some things I'd still rec'd even today.

We are planning to go to Italy in May so I'm going to page Monica about that!!!!

Celeste, let me know if I can be of help - I still remember a lot (although I remember most big events, and trips and stuff like that in life!!! ha ha)
