100+ degree temps and flowers

All right, so the dog days of summer have arrived in Oklahoma! Hooray...Confused

I was wondering if it is possible to maybe pinch back some of the plants that I know after a few days of this heat, even with good watering, are going to start to get straggly and leggy, like petunias, and give them a chance to spring back for a late summer/early fall bloom.

I also have sweet potato vine going out of control, but it's gotten so big that the ends get pretty wilted by the heat of the day. I figure I'll cut them back since they grow so prolifically, anyway.

What are your thoughts on this? It's mostly the petunias, though I've been cutting back the purple sage (had some dead spots, anyway) already.

Re: 100+ degree temps and flowers

  • I'd pinch them back. It'll help once the heat subsides. I need to do the same with my petunias. They are really suffering in this heat.

  • how do you pinch them back? i live in the city and grow mine in pots in y windowsill and they really took a hit during our hot spell. though, i think the hot spell is now over. so should i pinch them back, and if so how?
