Discussion: The Kids are All Right (may have spoilers)
We saw it this weekend...
For those of you who saw it, what did you think???
Re: Discussion: The Kids are All Right (may have spoilers)
1. I completely underestimated how great it would be to see our family reflected on the big screen. I typically identify more with the straight community than the glbt community b/c of parenting and general lifestyle - but it was so nice to see a lesbian family just being a family.
2. There was a lot of straight sex for a movie about 2 women...and the sex scene with the women was very bland in comparison. But maybe that was the point?
3. I am SO glad that the daughter never pulled the "but your not my real mother" crap. I was relieved that they didn't pull the biological card...not that it can't happen...but it was irrelevant in the family.
4. Julianne Moore needs to eat a sandwich...or 6
5. I loved that the movie could have been about any couple - gay or straight..and that we all do the same stuff: work, fight, go out, take our kids to college...
6. I lost it at the end...thinking about dropping the kids off at college. Holy crap....they won't live with us one day.
I cried at the end too!
I walked away from the movie feeling as though it was only okay. I appreciate the openness regarding sexuality and was so relieved that they didnt "turn her" straight and explored the idea that she could enjoy sex with a man but still identify as a lesbian.
I guess the biggest bummer for me was that they portrayed the marriage as being so passionless and miserable. I was cringing at their sex scene - blah! I mean, this is one of the very very few movies depicting lesiban families that make it to the general audience, couldn't they have at least been a little happy together?

I was kind of disappointed in the blah sex, but it did fit with the state of the union so to speak. I really appreciated how NORMAL it portrayed the gay family, and how unscrewed up the kids were
I was a bit on edge through the middle, but julianne moore's affirmation of her identity near the end made me feel better. sexuality and life is fluid. But I would have been pissed if she ran off with Mark Ruffalo.
Also...poor Annette Benning. Half of her clothes were just...wrong.
We didn't see it, but I can tell you that dropping your kid/s off at college is one of the saddest things to do. It gets even more sad when the calls get less and less and they begin to travel on their own. Then the dreaded "relationship" that is serious enough that s/he (they) want her/his (their) girl/boyfriend to meet you! ... I am sad just remembering. (Even harder when they are in harm's way as my daughter is now.)
CT - I think that was part of the point...that marriage isn't always great. It can be really freaking hard. I know that L and I have fallen into the trap of being parents first and wives second and it is really hard to break out of it and something that you continually have to work on and commit to. But I think that it something that is universal to all parents (gay and straight) which will make it have a universal appeal.
Cookie - LOL. L kept saying, "what are they wearing??!? They are giving lesbians a bad name!!!" Especially the scene where they are in a nice restaurant and the couple they are with are dressed really nicely and the 2 of them are in jeans and t-shirts. LOL.
Nevr - I can't imagine. It makes me well up just thinking about not being so close to my kids physically and emotionally...and being deployed? I can't fathom. My heart goes out to you.
