Major allergic reaction

So, who knew I was really allergic to hollyhock? Not me.

I decided to trim it back, along with some other things that I have rubbed my arms all over with no reaction, so it has to be it. I was driving to the school to get some work done (and now I'm waxed into my classroom...blah) and realized that my arms were absolutely covered in a painful rash!

I grabbed the max strength cortisone from the medicine cabinet at school and just slathered up my arms. Rash is gone but I'm all sticky feeling now!

Have you ever had an allergic reaction to something in your own flowerbeds? I hadn't really touched the hollyhock all that much. I knew it was itchy but I must have really gotten in there this morning Embarrassed

Re: Major allergic reaction

  • Yes.  I break out in hives from touching the tomato plants, but I can eat the tomatoes with no consequence.  Same with strawberry plants.  We went picking and my arms were covered, but I have no problem eating the fruit.

If the hydrocortisone doesn't work, take Benadryl.  The liquid type works fastest (although it can make you sleepy).

  • Ugh, I'm sorry!  I'm not allergic to anything in particular, but I have really sensitive skin so I get itchy and bumpy doing anything in the garden.  A shower and a little time makes it go away for me, but no fun!!

Me too! I get hives if I touch it, and if I break a stem my lungs go all wonky. I think it's the fuzzy stuff on the stems? Whatever it is, it sucks. There's also a weed growing ALLLL around our backyard fence that makes me itch like mad- yuck
