Counseling

Hey everyone! So i have been MIA for awhile and I am sorry. My dad passed away unexpectedly 2 weeks ago, so I went home to be with my family. I've never really had to deal with anyone dying before, so I am having a really hard time with it- that and I am the biggest daddy's girl in the world. I didnt know if any of you knew of a good counselor or something- I think going to counseling may help. Since we dont have a lot of money (DH still hasnt found a job yet) it would need to be fairly inexpensive- I dont know how these things work. Anyway, any help would be great. Thanks!

Re: Counseling

  • I don't know of a counselor although I wish I did (for the same reasons you listed of money being tight I haven't really looked).  But I just wanted to say I'm so sorry to hear about your father.  My mom passed away 6 years ago and some days it feels like it just happened.  The only advice I can give you is to allow yourself time to grieve.  Keeping a journal has helped me some as well.

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.

Here are some places you may find helpful:

    http://www.homc.org/support/

    http://www.miamicounseling.com/additional_services/grief_loss.asp

    http://www.catholichospice.org/grief

You may also want to call your local hospital as they may offer support groups as well.

I know VITAS and Hospice By the Sea also offer grief and loss counseling but hey are in Broward and Palm Beach and I see that you are in Miami so that may be a bit a far for you.

  • I'm a therapist and I give out 211 as a resource.  You can check it out online or call that number.  It's a resource line that provides information you need so if you inform them that you need inexpensive therapy services, they'll give you a list of non-profit agencies in Miami.  Hope that helps.  Good luck!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  I am a counselor also and 211 is a great resource.  Also many Universities have Psychology Phd. programs and offer therapy for a very reduced rate or free.  I know in Broward, Nova Southeastern University has a counseling center. Hope this helps.
  • That is such terrible news. I am so sorry for your loss.

  • If you are a member of your local church/archdiocese/temple, I would definitely seek help there first. It's usually completely free of cost. It's great that you're seeking therapy, it helps so much with the grieving process.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Best of luck to you.
