Band camp starts tomorrow. There is no a/c in the band room or auditorium. I was in there today and it was just exhausting and the room isn't ready. I figured I would go earlier tomorrow (it starts at 10...we don't have marching band so it's all indoors) and work on that.
I posted on the band's "fan" page on facebook that I would be there early and that I would appreciate any help from anyone who might be there early. A student just asked me what time I would be there and said they would be there to help me out.
After an awful and exhausting day (broke out in hives from a plant in my garden, split my toenail on a filing cabinet, no a/c, got floorwaxed into three different locations in the school, 2 of which had no a/c and I didn't have water) that means the world to me.
Re: This is why I love my job
Ugh, floorwaxing. It can be so inconvenient during this time of year when we're trying to get set up! What a considerate student. The ones like that make everything worth it. I'm sorry about your day!
On an unrelated note, I remember you teach quite a variety of subjects. Ever taught drama? I'm teaching a drama elective this year and I'm overwhelmed.
Haha amazingly, no, I have not taught drama. I was in speech and debate in high school, though. You'll make it! Is it just one class? What grade level are you teaching? Do they want it to be competitive or just a beginning drama class?
There are a lot of fun improv games you can play that helps the students kind of explore drama without having to memorize anything (the memorization part is what I see students being so afraid of).
The student told me he'd been working full-time this summer in a garage, so he was used to getting up at 7 and working in temps above 110. Gotta love how nonchalant he is about it.
That makes me thankful for my cushy summer jobs in high school! What a great work ethic he has.
I teach 9th grade English, and I will be picking up the drama elective for just one class in the fall semester. We're on the accelerated block schedule. The only expectation is that we put on a play by the end of the semester. My school doesn't have an auditorium, so last year the kids performed at the First Baptist rec center's stage down the road. We have zero pre-existing props, equipment, or costumes. I teach in rural school, so the focus is more on football...
