Advice for out-of-state apartment hunting?

Hello ladies,

I've lurked a bit on the boards but never posted--but I hope you guys might be able to give me some advice as I'm starting to become desperate.  DH and I are moving to NY in two weeks for my PhD program in Manhattan.  We have searched for 1 bedroom, no-fee apartments for months (in Brooklyn, Manhattan, or Queens) but are having an incredibly difficult time securing a decently-priced place from across the country.  I've found several intriguing units on Craigslist but each time I call I'm told the unit is no longer available, or it's an obvious scam, or it has a fee that was not disclosed in the listing.  I'm realizing more and more that securing a place long distance may be an impossible idea, but I also don't feel like it's such a great plan to drive around in a moving truck to view apartments in the city when we get there, either.... Do any of you have recommendations for finding a place when someone is physically unable to view the apartment before signing a lease?

TIA!

  • My cousin is renting her apartment, its in Chelsea if you want details let me know i can get you too in touch via PM

  • my old apartment is up for rent, and here it is.  we loved this place, and only left because we bought a condo.  http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/fee/1876199814.html

that said, if you can afford it, you should really have an agent do the looking for you.  try www.corcoran.com   they are one of the biggest real estate firms in the city, and have properties basically everywhere.

ETA:  landlady actually lowered the price, so here is the correct listing.  i'm still in contact with her on a friendly basis if you need any other help.

  • Is there any way you could come to the city for a couple days to apartment search in person? Otherwise, working with a broker is a good option. It's really hard to find a decent place without looking in person. Online photos can be deceptive & incorrect.

Also...it depends on your budget what you can find. Really cheap/good deals will go really fast in the city.
