Rec. Your Internet Provider

We move in to our new place in San Marcos on Saturday. I have this week off and am trying to set up everything ahead of time for a smooth move. The last thing on my list is an internet provider. We do not want cable as we are cutting back our budget. The two I've looked at- Time Warner and Grande- are cheaper if you include cable, but basic internet by itself seems costly.

Anyone have experience with these two companies or another internet service to recommend?

TIA!

PS In the coming weeks I'll be hitting this board up for lots of recs as I will officially be living in the area and need to hear about all your favorite restaurants, things to do, etc Smile Look forward to officially being an Austin (er, San Marcos) Nestie!

Re: Rec. Your Internet Provider

  • I had Grande when I lived in San Marcos and never had any real problems with it.  I do have problems with Time Warner a lot, I wish we could still have Grande.

  • My husband had Grande for 2 years in college and had a really great experience with them. He laments the fact that they do not serve our area and we have to go with Time Warner. Poor kid, haha.
  • I've had Grande for 5 yrs and haven't had any issues.  They are easy to get ahold of and were awesome to work with when we did our remodel & wanted to suspend our cable while we weren't in the house.  We've also got our cable and landline through them and bundle them together.

The only minor thing . . . they use a different cable box so since the previous owner had time warner, they had to come install another box on the outside of our house with the new cable.

  • I've been very happy w/ Time Warner for 8 years.  Also, if you price shop, you can usually get the one you want to match the cheapest price.

Welcome to Austin!  I know you are moving from north to south, but as a newlywed you're welcome here.  The board is super slow right now w/ summer, but will pick up later.  We have some gtg's- the south one is in Buda pretty soon.  Also there's a book club that rotates all over town.

  • we have uverse and have been happy with it.  we hated time warner.

this, although I have to say that I didn't hate Time Warner and I really miss news8austin (time warner only channel).

However the benefits of uverse are awesome and totally outweigh weather on the 8's Big Smile

  • I have Uverse now and we love it. I had Grande in the past and also loved it. Time Warner is the devil. :)

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies! I'm adding U-Verse to the list and marking off Time Warner.
  • You might also want to check into Clear.  My DH is a sales rep for them and could give you some info on coverage and prices if you like.  You can shoot him an email at jschoepflin AT datamixx.com.  Two other Nesties have done business with him and have good things to say.  I'm biased of course.  We use Clear at home and love it.

ETA: Crap, I gave you his email incorrectly earlier and left off an "x".  It's correct now. :)
