Best TP?

I thought I didn't really mind the rougher EF toilet paper, but I think I do. I could live with it, and I do, but wow... long story short I forgot to buy TP and some dog people came by with an emergency, and happened to have a roll of TP in their truck! Nice, fancy, plush TP that was probably made from old-growth forests and small children. But it was so nice. And I realized I used much less of it.

Why can't there be a softer, thicker EF TP?? Is there? I have Seventh Generation this time and it says its now softer. Wow, I'd hate to feel what it was like before then!!

What's the best EF TP? I don't care about price really. I'm one person, high-end TP isn't going to break my budget, even though its tight.

Re: Best TP?

  • I don't think I have. Weird - I just did a store locator search and the only place its sold anywhere near me is Fred Meyer, a big chain mega-grocery/big box store. Gah.

  • Oh I was just griping! I'll still find time at some point to stop in and get some to try out. I just think its weird that an EF brand is sold there, and not at Whole Foods or any of our local 'green' chains like PCC or Metropolitan Market.

I prefer not to shop with big companies, other than Whole Foods, and its not convenient, but for nicer TP, I will make a special trip. Fred Meyer is a Kroger store.

  • I'm not sure what the brand is, but I buy recycled TP from Costco and it's not bad.  (possibly that small steps brand posted above.  I know the packaging is yellow.)

  • I second Marcal - we tried several and this was the only one that passed the test!

If you like it you can sign up for coupons on their website.

We don't have a Kroger so I don't know if there is a backstory there.  It is weird that its not at the "green" store, although I found mine at Ace Hardware of all places.

How odd!! Hmm...we have Ace Hardware but it didn't come up on the list.

I don't have anything particular against Kroger, I just feel that shopping at the big chain grocers supports the whole conglomerate food industry that I don't agree with. I'd go in and buy TP, and will, but its odd, since we have like 3 large, successful local chains that are all about being green, and Whole Foods!

I'm glad to see Marcal has such good reviews! I'm not thrilled with Seventh Generation, or whatever I had before.

  • I haven't tried Marcal because I haven't seen it at New Seasons.  I agree that Seventh Generation sucks - that's what we have now and the stupid layers don't line up so it tears weird and it annoys me.  I really liked Green Forest, and I think it has the highest percentage of post-consumer recycled products at 90%.  Of course, I've only compared Green Forest and Seventh Generation, so it could totally suck.
  • If you're going to use Marcal be sure to buy at least the two ply!!  When I first bought Marcal I didn't really pay attention and bought the single-ply kind and I must say it's pretty much worthless.  Well, not worthless but you end up having to use a whole lot more to compensate.  But, just going to the two-ply  has made a huge difference.  Now I barely notice that it's an EF TP!!

Maybe you could request it at one of the greener places you shop regularly?  A lot of retailers are open to at least trying out products their customers' requests.

We're one year into our inherited single ply TP (some of it dated 1986!)  When we run out someday, I'll try this magical Marcal.

  • I like the TJ's 100% recycled TP.  I haven't tried the other stuff mentioned, mostly since it seems to have limited availability.  FWIW, I hated the Seventh Gen TP and most of the other products of theirs I've tried :(
  • I'm blessed with a non-sensitive tush, but I've used Green Forest and TJ's w/o issue or complaints from Mr.P.

CVS also has a recycled option, but I haven't tried it.

lmao!! Wow, I'd use 1/2 ply if it were free!

I'll buy the Marcal, you can visit again and try it out here! Hank misses you! Stick out tongue

  • I've been using the Marcal and it is not too bad. I too hated the 7th gen stuff. However TMI - now that I am pregnant and peeing constantly I think I really need plusher TP, I am noticing how rough it is b/c I have to use it so much more often than I used to. I get mine at stop n shop or shaws. I don't really shop there for anything else, but they are right near my house.

  • Love TJs.  We used Scott extra soft before we switched.  DH approves
  • I mostly use President's Choice GREEN, but that's a Canadian generic.

I bought some Purex recycled stuff. It was fine. I can't fathom how bad American recycled TP is - it's got to be worse than I what I buy, as my TP has always been unremarkable.

  • I love Marcal, but we've been trying to do more of our grocery shopping at stores with more natural/organic products. Currently we're using Trader Joe's.
  • This post has been removed because it violates The Nest TOS.

  • I use the Marcal 2 ply too. The easiest to find.
