The new NY license plates

They suck!  They totally ruin the look of our new car.  Is anyone else not thrilled with the new plates?

  • I'm not a fan of them either.  I liked the white ones although I didn't love that blob picture of NYS in the middle of the letters.  Looks like a bird pooped on my license plate, not a picture of the state of New York.

  • They are ugly!  What a WASTE of tax payers money!!!!!

Tina - Love your new siggy pic!

  • omg I just posted a long reply and the nest ate it...grrr but basically our local news looked into the claim that the new plates were because cops couldnt see the numbers on the white ones and it wasnt true...

guess its just another money maker for the state...

  • From what I understand they've been pretty open about the fact that the primary motivation for it is so that they can charge a new plate fee.  I'd rather pay the damn fee (and have them be more transparent about it -- how dumb do they think we are?) and keep the blue & white plates.  The new ones are hideous.
  • Oh they are awful. I am all for nostalgia but this is just wrong. Luckily our cars are white and black but I feel bad for those who have cars that the license plates clash with. If you wanted to make knew fee at least make the plates nice looking.

  • They look like the plates that drunk drivers have to put on their cars in OH.  That's all I can think about when I see them!!

  • Here's what I dont get:

I currently have the white and blue plates, but my registration needs to be renewed in September, I got my paperwork from DMV, and here are my options:

    1. I can keep my current blue and white plate

    2. Get new Gold plates with a new license plate #

    3. Get new Gold Plate with current license plate number

The cheapest option is to keep my current plates, the most expensive option is to get a new gold plate with my SAME license plate #.

Other than new car purchases, what is the incentive to get the gold plates???? Whats the point?

Is the cost the same for #1 & 2?  One of my cars is up for renewal in October.  Between EZ Pass, my work parking garage, etc., I'd really rather not go through the hassle of changing plate numbers, but I'm not into paying for option #3.

  • Is the cost the same for #1 & 2?

Nope, the cheapest option is to keep your current plates. It costs more to get the gold plates with a new number, and then even more than that to get gold plates with your current number!

I wondered the same thing. We didn't get the new ones, why pay the extra money?

Even then, you can just transfer your white plates from your old car to your new car, so still don't have to have the new ugly yellow ones!

So I guess you only have to take them if you don't have another care to transfer the plates from - like your very first car or something.  Crazy.
