We still haven't turned our foster/adopt application in ... I called the center last night to confirm the timeline to get everything in and we are still good. We've been delaying because we need to fix a few things around the house before the home inspections but when I explained that to the receptionist she said just to hurrry and get the app in because the holidays are coming up and everything slows down at that time. We are going to get our app in ASAP now. She also said not to fix anything before the home inspection so that they can tell us exactly what needs to be fixed. I know there are a few things that definitely need to be taken care of though. Can you advise me on what you think should be priority?
Wood Fence - half of it is missing, there is a short shoddy chainlink fence behind it so there isn't really acces to the neighbors yard
Window screens - in training we were told that all windows have to have screens on them, even non opening windows, we are missing 8
Fire extinguisher
Locking cabinet - to lock up meds, cleaning supplies, and knives
Locking box in fridge - for refrigerated meds
Furniture - we have a crib and baby supplies for an infant, the bunkbeds haven't come in yet and we haven't gotten dressers (DD uses the shelves in her closet as a dresser but it's not enough space for 2 kids to share)
What should we take care of first and what do you think can wait until after the inspection?
Re: CA Foster/Adoptive Moms Please Come In
Every agency has their own rules for licensing so it can be hard to predict what yours wants.
I would go with screens, beds, smoke detectors and baby-proofing first. We had all of those and were licensed on the spot. If you get the stick-on locks it will make the job of locking cabinets, appliances, refrigerators so much easier.
As long as your yard is safe I don't think the fence will be an issue.
Good luck!

Good idea. We used a shelf in our linen cabinet and locked the cabinet. It fulfilled the out of reach and locked rule but it sounds like they want you to have a little lockbox as well. They do sell medication lockboxes online but I am not sure how much they are.
I know some agencies require a thermometer in the fridge but county homes do not. Our adoption social worker trainee had her whole torso in our fridge looking for it before her supervisor told her we didn't need one LOL!
LMAO! They haven't said anything about a thermometer in the fridge. They do check everything in the fridge to make sure none of it is expired though. I will have to clean the fridge the day before.

wow, what a difference between areas and agencies!
we've had a million home inspections and never once did anyone look in our fridge...

The worker that told us about home inspections scared all of us! He said he is very strict. When he left, the regular trainer said most of us won't get him and that he is overly strict. I guess he's been talked to a few times about being too harsh on home inspections. I'm still cleaning the fridge just to be safe. LOL.
