mums in pots?

so i am really new to this board. i have never been into growing plants or anything until we recently bought our first condo in the city and i planted petunias in pots in the windows, and discovered that i loved the feeling of watching them grow and blossom.

i have always loved mums in the fall. can i plant them in pots in the windowsill? i understand that they wont last and obviously wont come back next year. but would they survive for the duration of the fall?

TIA, from a very new gardener.

Re: mums in pots?

  • Yep, that's what ya do with 'em :)  Plant in pots for the fall until they die.  Things to know:

    - Buy ones with buds, not blooms. Generally speaking, once mums bloom, they're done.

    - Keep them out of the rain; they don't like their flowers wet.

    - White and light yellow ones can look messy when their blooms start dying and turn brown.  Dark colors won't show this as much and look nicer longer.

ETA - Oh, and buy the size you want when you buy them.  They won't grow in your yard, so if you want big, buy big.

Many (plants in the family Asteraceae) are hardy.

You can google by family name or Chysanthemum, Leucanthemum, or Dendranthema. I agree that the dark colored flowers look better longer.

Do not top-water Asters; the flowers will rot.

  • I plan on putting some mums in pots, since I actually have some pots this year! I have some mums that have come back from last fall and they are doing well, despite the extreme heat.

I can't wait for pansies and mums. They do so well here. Even if the mums are fairly short-lived.

  • i have mums in pots. i had bought them w/ blooms in spring - now they are greens and pushing out new buds.

keep them watered and in a part sunny spot. should last the winter and bloom next spring too. you can wrap the planter in cloth if it gets too cold.
