Student Loans! Financial gurus lea come in.

So my DH and I are both in repayment of our loans. I have two lenders, One with the same company as his who is not offering consolidations until October. I want to know what the best thing to do is when you are in repayment of student loans?

I just got off the phone and got them to lower my monthly payment but that just means that until I figure this all out my payment is only going to interest and not principal. What else should I be doing? Can I only consolidate with either comapny A or Company B whom I have loans with? Is there a "best of" lender for student loans?

Your help is much appreciated! :-)

Re: Student Loans! Financial gurus lea come in.

  •  Not sure what happened to the P and the SE in please from the title. LOL Sorry for any typos.

  • You should be able to consolidate them all to one place.  But, it depends on what kind of loans they are.  Are they federal or private?

Private loans can be consolidated through various sources.  I know when we looked, Chase, Citibank and WellsFargo all offered programs for this - although there are non-bank companies that can do it as well.  Federal loans can be consolidated but it's a different process because that is handled through the Direct system.

Just like any loan, a consolidation loan will have different interest rates to account for.  The best thing you can do is shop around for interest rates.

  • Thanks for the help Jaye. Yeah wasn't sure if you could shop around for better interest rate or not. So when Co. A can do consolidations again I guess I will be compairing their interest rate to Co. B. Most of my loans are Federal with one private loan but I have paid it down quite a bit that it would not be that big of a factor when consolidationg and I think that loan is already at like 2% interest from previously consolidating.

  • Ahh, okay.  I believe you can only consolidate once per loan, so your private is probably going to stay the way it is - at least this is how I remember being told.

Here is the site for the federal loan consolidation http://www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov/
