Does anyone sew?

Sewing is on my "list" of things I want to learn to do.  For some reason is keeps getting bumped though.  I start researching what I need to get (machine and supplies) and then I end up going with another hobby I want to try.  The last two years I was able start horseback riding and the guitar.  It is really time I get to sewing.  Does anyone sew?  If so are there any tips you can offer me as a beginner?

Re: Does anyone sew?

  • I know how (the basics anyway) but I kind of always knew.  My mom sews a ton so I just kind of learned as I grew up.

I have a basic machine - Kenmore is a good brand (that's what mine is - from Sears).  As for learning, maybe see if Michael's or JoAnn Fabrics offers a weekend class or something?

  • I bought a sewing machine last October, does that count? Stick out tongue

I'm like you, keep meaning to learn but then get distracted.  I don't know why, it seems like a very cool skill but I think I'm intimidated.  You should start hanging out on the Crafts board--lots of really talented ladies over there and they make the cutest things for their kids that should inspire anyone to get started.

Also, look at the FAQ at the top of the Crafts page, compiled by yours truly.  There are some suggestions in there for machines, how beginners can get started, etc.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

    Ha ha ha.  Thanks!

  • I guess it depends on what you want to sew. Clothes, quilts, alterations, a little of everything? Fabric stores have tons of books and it's literally step by step, but I would take a basics class first (how to set up and thread the machine, using cutting tools, types of stitches and so on). Once you have the basics, grab a book and get sewing! I also grew up with sewing and I have been making quilts, stuffed animals, bags and stuff since I was 7 years old. Log Cabin quilts are very easy if you want to go that route! Good luck.
